Epilogue (Ch39)

-Afterwards-

‘Kendra Adams,’ Principle Osborne announces as a blonde, chirpy girl dressed in a long graduation robe walks up to the stage to collect her diploma. She presents the biggest smile on her face before the next name is announced. It’s not long before my name is announced.

Nerves and anxiety envelop me, discouraging me to go any further. However, I push through and before long I’m shaking the hand of our principle. But before I get the chance to walk away, she winks at me and smiles in an all-too caring way. I could read the message in her eyes.

Congratulation, kid, you did me proud.” I return it with a wholehearted smile, concluding our silent conversation.

The ceremony went in a flurry and before long everyone had stepped up to receive their high school diplomas. We conclude with big smiles, throwing our graduation caps in the air, screaming in excitement.

It had finally come, the day all our troubles would be left behind us and we were given a new start. It was the day that we were to successfully complete a major rite of passage into adulthood.

But there was one thing missing…or one person should I say. And on that thought, Principle Osborne presents herself onto the stage and ushers silence among the cheery crowd of parents, teachers and students.

‘Before we concluded this marvellous ceremony and allow for further celebration, I must call upon Mr Cole Ford to the stage.’ She spoke before Cole strides up in confidence, many of the parents looking at him in spectacular awe.

Principle Osborne pats him on the back in encouragement before seating herself on one of the seats by the stage.

‘Today we see the class of 2013 graduate. These students, who have spent the majority of their lives in school, are now able to experience the start of their lives. However, one student in particular was unable to make it here and on behalf of him, I say this now. Kiren Jones was an amazing, charismatic eighteen year old boy. He spent his entire high school life at Northern Bay Academy and got on well with many of the staff here. He was respected, he was on the path of accomplishment, but natural order stepped in his way. Unfortunately, a few months ago, Kiren’s brain tumour worsened and shortly, he passed. Kiren was always the liveliest person in the room; always the one with the biggest and brightest smile. He overcame so much with his two best friends, Avery Blake and Meghann Vanderent, as well as his good friend Ashton Palmer. Kiren will be missed by many but he’ll always be in our hearts. And so I conclude this wonderful ceremony with kind words to my kind little friend; we love you, Kiren.’ Cole bowed his head as we all applauded in eagerness and respect.

Kiren, once again, appears in my mind, but this time I wasn’t going to confront his image with tears nor anger, instead, I smile and look up into the clear, blue sky in which I knew Kiren was watching down upon us.

‘I love you, Kiren.’ I whisper softly before the ceremony concludes and it is time for everyone to party.

Everyone hugs everyone; tears streaming down many people’s faces.

I move to the side, observing the actions of my happy ex-classmates. Everyone is joyous, everyone is merry, and everyone is grateful to have made it thus far.

‘Avery, I’ve been looking for you!’ spoke Kimberly in excitement as she approaches me and hugs me tight, whispering “congratulations” in my ear while doing so.

‘Any news from mum? I ask in hesitance.

‘Yeah…I’ve been in touch with her,’ Kim smiles. ‘If you’re really ready to do this, I booked us plane tickets next week.’

‘You mean…next week im going to be seeing my…my mother?’ I ask as excitement as well as shock runs through me.

‘You betcha, little sister,’ winks Kim. I laugh in response, hugging her once again.

Meghann and Ashton join us before long and we converse for a little while.

‘He would have loved this…I wish he was here.’ Meghann says sadly.

‘He is, Meghann, he’ll always be with us.’ I say with a small smile. We, too, embraced for what must have been the billionth time that day.

‘Mind if I borrow Avery for a second?’ Cole questions as he approaches us with an odd smile.

Everyone nods happily before Cole walks me a little down the path, still in sight of my friends and my sister. He then stops me in his path before standing right in front of me, his arm lightly touching my shoulder.

‘Avery, you know I love you so much, I have for the past year. But it feels like I’ve known you forever. Everything we’ve been through has brought us closer and closer together and I think we almost seem like an old married couple.’ Cole pauses before stepping back, looking away while reaching into his pocket. He then drops to the ground before I realise he’s on one knee, looking eagerly but lovingly up towards me. My heart stops beating for a few seconds as strong astonishment passes through me.

‘Avery Blake, will you marry me?’ Cole asks.

My friend’s stand nearby watching the scene in anxiety. They, too, were just as shocked as I was.

A few seconds pass before I regain my voice.

‘Y-yes,’ I whisper before Cole leaps into my arms and embraces me in the deepest kiss I’ve ever experienced. I hear many people cheering around us but I’m not paying attention to them. Instead, I’m focused on the beautiful man in my arms.

‘I love you, Ms Blake.’ Cole says mockingly, just as he used to.

‘I love you, Mr Ford.’ I laugh.
