Chapter 33
Karma- I turned my head upright and was met with a familiar face.

‘Kiren, did you hear me? Do not, under any circumstance leave Avery alone and do not, under any circumstance take your eyes off her. Stay right here, I’m going to go get help and I’ll be back as soon as I can. Stay safe, both of you.’ Cole said to Kiren and I as he locked eyes with me and paused before whispering ‘I love you,’ and hurrying away.

He left me standing in the middle of the walkway in the centre of Northern Bay, beside Kiren.

Fear pulsed through me; I mean, was Cole truly expecting me to stand here and do nothing and let myself be babysat by Kiren? The man wasn’t serious, I hoped.

Then a sudden and horrific realisation hit me. These words played in my mind, over and over as I was paralysed with fear.

“I’d hand myself over to him before he got the chance to hurt you again.”

“I’d hand myself over to him before he got the chance to hurt you again.”

“I’d hand myself over to him before he got the chance to hurt you again.”

She couldn’t…could she? No way could Meghann hand herself over to her psychotic step father…it wasn’t possible. No, no, no.

And then again, I may just as well have been in denial.

Kiren must at some point have said something as his voice snapped me out of my state.

‘…Avery? Did you, uhh, hear me?’ Kirens voice was rough and I could clearly see his breathing was uneven.

‘Oh, I’m sorry; what?’

‘I said that I really hope Meghann is okay. Do…do you think she’s okay?’ he asked, sounding completely unsure of himself.

‘Do you want the honest answer, or do you want the pretty answer?’ I asked Kiren flatly, trying to keep my adrenaline under control.

‘You don’t think, uhh, that Meghann’s step dad is really here, do you?’ Kiren questioned again.

But before I had enough time to think up a response, Ashton came rushing over to us with a startled look.

‘I-I just saw Cole. What the hell happened? I mean one minute I was sitting there with Meghann on the grass behind the main area of the school and then the next moment she was acting really weird and she said she had to go and she was sorry and all this stuff that I don’t quite understand. Care to fill me in?’ Ashton seemed more on edge than I had ever seen him before.

His hair was sticking up in all areas as though he had run his hands through his hair in anxiety a thousand times. But who could blame the kid? I don’t think he had ever experienced anything like this before. He was just so sweet…too sweet and innocent if anything.

So I briefly explained the afternoon’s events to Ashton. As I concluded, I watched as Ashtons face displayed the utmost shock and fear.

‘Meghann…her step-father…she’s in dangg-‘ but before he could conclude, not he, but Kiren fainted beside us in the most unexpected way. For a moment I had thought Ashtons face was to burst and he was going to faint but instead, Kiren collapsed.

It was probably too much for Kiren to handle, I thought.

‘Oh god, maybe that was a bit too much for him.’ I bit my lip anxiously.

‘You think?’ Ashton asks rhetorically, sounding bemused.

‘Hold on, I’ll go get help,’ and before Ashton has enough time to neither say anything nor properly think about the situation at hand, I was off, running as fast as my legs could take me.
