Chapter 37-
Part one
Graduation was looming ahead. I was petrified but excited at the same time. But as to which University I should apply to, I was still confused. Maybe I could take a gap year?
But before many of us seniors could focus on the excitement of graduation, we had to deal with the constant reminder that exams were coming, and they were coming fast.
Each class we had, the teacher always mentioned exams. It was always exams this, exams that. The pressure upon us was unimaginable, almost unbearable. But I came to the conclusion that the pressures everyone was putting on us and the days and weeks looming up to exams- they were going to be far worse than the actually exam period.
The need to pass overwhelmed me as my anxiety took over. It was almost like if I didn’t pass with a good mark, I was going to fail the subject, fail school, not get a decent job, get horrible pay and end up on the streets forever alone…then die.
Anxiety was a bitch.
So with this astounding pressure from myself and my teachers, I withdrew a little from everyone and got stuck into revision. I was revising in every spare minute I got. Sure, I wasn’t always the biggest overachiever but it was almost like something snapped in me before my mind was buried under the burden of the final exams.
‘Hey, Avery, I know I’m one of your best friends and stuff and I see you in almost every class, but it feels like I haven’t properly seen you in forever.’ Meghann announced as she came into my dorm room, walking around, picking up sheets and books that were spread out everywhere to examine.
‘Geez, Avery, isn’t this a little much? Going a little bit overboard are we not?’ Meghann mocked.
‘-no, Meghann…just…‘ I exclaimed in exhaustion.
‘All right…all right…I won’t push you. Just please take a break. When’s the last time you’ve seen your man? Or even gone out, to think of it?’
‘I don’t know but it doesn’t matter though; my future is at stake… I’ve screwed up enough in my life; these exams are something I definitely am not going to screw up.’ I said softly, with strain in my voice.
‘Avery, what in God’s name are you talking about? Screwing up? P-lease… if anyone’s screwed up in their lives it would be me. So get up from your wallowing and stop feeling sorry for yourself. I will not be having my best friend stress herself out because of her exams. You need to go out.’ Meghann said kindly.
I stood up and gathered my books into a singular pile before plunking on my bed with a heavy sigh. True, I was exhausted, and yes, I did in fact need to go out.
‘Where to, Meghann?’ I said, surrendering.
She squealed before taking my hand and forcing me up from my bed.

Loud music pumped from the surrounding speakers as the floor literally vibrated beneath our feet. The room held a colourfully blinding darkness (ironically enough) and people danced around us. In these moments, the guy who had lost his girlfriend in a car crash two years ago was fist pumping to the music. The DJ who had lost everything in his house fire was smiling in an outrageously proud way as he controlled the music. Everyone, at this moment, was cheerful and carefree.
And so as my eyes returned to the small rounded table Meghann and I sat at, I heard a distinct cough coming from nearby. Meghann and I redirected our eyes to the source of the cough before observing two males who looked as though they were in their mid-twenties. Their hair was pushed back with a life supply of hair gel, their shirts tightened with each movement as their muscles seemed to be a little more prominent than seemed natural.
