Chapter 12

The Unmistakable Loss -I stood there against the wall in shock.

Cole Ford’s POV

…Recap…

Kiren’s eyes were full of tears as he spoke.

‘I-I have cancer…’

Kiren fell to the ground at that. I cursed under my breath as I leaped to him to see if he was OK.

He was, to a certain extent.

‘Just let go of me.’ He said as he yanked himself free of me and sat on the ground as he wrapped his arms around his knees.

I sat down across from him and folded my legs. ‘Do you want to talk?’ I asked.

‘No, yes, I don’t know!’ he said hysterically.

‘It’s OK Kiren, just talk to me.’ I tried to convince him.

‘O-OK. Where should I start?’ he asked.

‘Where ever you think necessary.’

His eyes were wet with tears but none seemed to escape. ‘U-uh I have some Hereditary Brain Cancer thing. M-my dad died from it-‘ he said as I interrupted ‘I thought you had both your parents?’

‘No, well yeah I do but my mum re-married.’

‘Oh.’ is all I said as he continued.

‘I was feeling really sick and dizzy so I went straight to the doctor because I was afraid it would be Cancer like my dad had and she confirmed it was. She asked how long I’ve been feeling like this and I said a while and she asked why I hadn’t come to her sooner but it was because of everything with Avery. I was too occupied with what was happening with her to even give myself a second thought. But Avery doesn’t know so please don’t tell her!’

‘Oh god, Kiren, I am so sorry!’

‘It’s OK.’

‘But Avery Is your best friend, you have to tell her. She knows something is wrong because you’re not acting yourself and she’s going to find out sooner or later.’

‘And I’m hoping later. I trust you not to tell her or Meghann, please!’ he said desperately.

I stayed silent as I eyed Kiren.

‘Ok kid but just take care of yourself. Avery still has a lot going right now so I guess the best thing is to postpone it.’

‘Like what?’ he asked.

‘Never mind, it’s not my place to tell you. But you’re keeping stuff from her too so its fair play and if you actually talked to her I’m sure she would tell you.’

‘I can’t.’

‘Why not?’

‘Because I won’t be able to look at her.’

‘Why’s that Kiren?’ I asked softly.

‘B-because I’m keeping all this from her and I feel so guilty and I can’t imagine what all this would do to her.’

‘Oh.’ is all I said.

‘Have you told the school?’

‘N-no but my doctor did. She said she had to because of all the Chemo and check-ups I need.’
