Chapter 7

Fear and misfortune- And that’s when I screamed!

‘So Avery, have you ever considered finding out who your real parents were… are; or even a sibling or cousin?’ Naomi asked as she sat at her desk, looking across to me with the kind smile of hers.

It was now Monday and Naomi had decided that I had to have counselling twice a week or more if I wanted but I said it would be fine.

‘Um… I haven’t really thought about finding them as much as the thought of actually knowing who they are.’ I said truthfully.

She nodded her head as she scribbled down on her clipboard like she usually did.

Her long, straight brown hair swung with every movement. I looked to the side as my eyes made contact with the window. I saw the sun shining through the thin glass. It was a lovely day outside in this early June weather. The tree’s branches and leaves swayed the slightest bit in the minimal wind current. The grass looked greener than it usual did and many teenagers wandered the fields or simply hung around and chattered with their peers and friends.

‘If you were given the opportunity, would you like to try and locate your family?’ Naomi asked.

I had to try and think as the question struck me by surprise. I had always wanted to know who my family were and why they had left me. If I were younger, I would have jumped to the question with little or no hesitation but now as I sat here and the reality of it was trying to process through my mind as I still couldn’t believe it; I was left speechless.

Naomi broke the silence ‘Avery? Do you need a minute?’ she asked kindly.

I shook my head hesitantly ‘N-no… no-‘ I said the last bit a bit more confidently as I continued ‘-I’m just speechless I guess.’

‘Tell me what’s going through your mind Avery.’

I repeated my previous thoughts.

‘Avery you may be over thinking it. I can’t promise you anything; we can try (if you want) try and see where we get but only if you’re OK with it.’

‘Do you offer this to everyone who comes to you?’ I joked.

She returned my smile ‘Of course not… but Avery, you’re different, your situation is different, you’ve been through a lot in your life and I think with a family there to back you up, everything will be easier. I never usually feel this close to the kids I help but I just hope you know I’m always here for you no matter what you have to tell me, just remember it’s confidential.’ She concluded.

‘So you’re doing it for sympathy…’ I trailed.

Her expression changed to one of horror ‘Of course not-‘ she tried to say but I cut her off ‘-I know… I was just making sure. And I know I can come to you and that most of it is confidential.’

‘Why do you say “most”?’ Naomi asked.

‘Well the illegal stuff wouldn’t be confidential… I’ve watched enough movies and read enough books to know that at least.’

‘Avery, is there something you’re not telling me?’ she hesitantly asked.

I was deep in thought as I didn’t know how to approach or even get around this situation I had created for myself.

‘Well yes but you see the problem don’t you? I can’t tell you…’

‘What are you doing Avery?! You’re digging a deeper grave for yourself.’ I kept telling myself.
