Chapter Thirty-Six

The three of us froze before spinning around. Zayn was looking at us with an unreadable expression. Way to go, Maggie. Way to make things awkward. Well, I hadn't made things much better myself, had I? What was he still doing here? Had he gotten suspended? What happened? Maggie looked at him and then me before turning back to him.

"Hey, Zayn! How's it going?" Maggie said nervously, patting him on the shoulder. He looked at her hand then back at us.

"One of you is right and the other is wrong," he stated simply.

"You going to tell us who?" Maggie questioned after a moment.

"Sorry, but she knows," he smirked just slightly. Maggie studied him for a moment before poking his shoulder again.

"What are you doing?" Liam questioned, looking at her like she'd grown an extra head.

"I'm trying to figure out why he's looking at me like that. I thought we were cool?" she commented.

"We are but most girls don't usually touch me," Zayn explained.

"Probably doesn't want to endure the wrath of your psycho girlfriend," Liam muttered.

"Excuse me?" Zayn demanded.

"You heard me," he shot back.

"Will both of you stop," I groaned.

"Lucky for you I'm very happy with Liam," Maggie smiled then an idea seemed to form in her head.

"So, if I poke you repeatedly will Melinda come to attack me?" She poked him a few more times and looked around.

"No, guess not. Anyway, Liam and I will see you in class."

"Why are we going so early?" Liam groaned and glared at Zayn.

"Because we will see them in class," she said, threading her fingers through his.

Don't leave me!

They walked away, or rather Maggie dragged Liam away, and I turned to Zayn with a glare. "Is there any reason why you're being a jerk to her?"

"I'm not being a jerk. I just explained I'm not used to people poking me."

"I wonder why," I rolled my eyes.

"You shouldn't be wondering anything. I've told you more recently than I've wanted to."

"I wonder a lot of things, Zayn, and for the record, you never seem to answer anything the way I need you to."

"There's something I did answer for you that you should know and if you do then you just lied."

My pulse quickened. "What are you talking about?"

"You know Miles cares about you," he argued.

I bit my lip. "I don't know anything."

He scuffed. "You're in denial then because you know he still loves you. I told you that."

"Exactly! You told me. Miles never told he still loved me."

"You want proof? Fine! That fight between Miles and George? It was over what George did to you."

"What—"

"He and I had both been ready to pummel him, but Miles got there first, and I wasn't about to go the two against one route even if he deserved it."

"Why were you going to fight him? I thought you guys were friends."

"Are you really that stupid, Ariel?"
