Tangled Strings (sequel to Red Strings)

Chapter 15

"Well students it's TIME!  We're finally going to announce this year's prom king and queen!" Mrs. Renolds stated enthusiastically.  She was our chirpy vice principal and she said "Alright, you've all voted and it's all been tallied up and we're finally here to announce it!"

"We'll start with the boys...." she said as she got the envelope handed to her and she opened the envelope daintily and then spoke into the mic.  "Our prom king this year goes to Cameron Lumberton!"  There was a bunch of applause and I saw Cameron make his way up onto the stage.  I can see he's scanning the crowd for me, as the crown gets placed on his head.

"And now, for the prom queen....." The suspense is terrible.  I couldn't care less about the title, but I just wanted it to be over and done with.  "Natalie Lane!"  There is a whole bunch of cheering now and suddenly I feel Sabrina come up behind me and push me up onto the stage.  "Ugh another spotlight?" I groan as she says "Hey, hey do it for us yeah?" 

I sigh and replied "I will, I will."  I take a deep breath before stepping onto the stage, putting on the best fake-but-convincing smile I could muster up.  I stood beside Cameron as the cushion holding the crown got revealed.  The crown was just a simple tiara, and it gently got placed on my head as I stood and continued to smile widely. 

There was a thunderous appaluse and I could see that Calum was looking at me.  I knew that look in his eyes.  The "that-should-be-me" look.  I swallowed as I looked at Cam, smiling again and intwined my hand with his.  "And now Norwest's newly crowned prom king and queen are going to go into dance!" Mrs. Renolds says and suddenly the floor clears and I look at Cam.

He grins, as he gently leads me onto the floor as the lights dim and a song begin to plays.  Cameron puts his arms around my waist, and I put my arms around his neck as we gently sway.  I immediately recognize the tune, and I silently hum along to it. 

Heart beats fast

Colors and promises

How to be brave?

How can I love when I'm afraid to fall?

But watching you stand alone,

All of my doubt suddenly goes away somehow.

One step closer

I look at Cameron and he grins at me, and I return a small smile, and I put my head against his chest, as the chorus starts.  

I have died every day waiting for you

I'll love you for a thousand more

I feel tears welling up in my eyes and I look to the side to see Calum is staring at me and Cameron.  I bite my lip, as I look back to Cameron who whispers "Are you ok?" "I just love this song...." I whisper as I blink back the tears.  I know Calum is still watching, and I can't even dare to sneak another glance.  

I see that Luke and Skyler made their way onto the floor, as they dance too.  There's a bunch of other couples that have come too, and we continue to dance, knowing the spotlight is mainly on me and Cam.  The prom royalty.  

Eventually the song is finished, and there's a bunch of applause, and Cameron leans in, and kisses me.  It's a passionate kiss, and I grip onto him to keep my balance, as we continue to kiss as everyone claps.  We finally pull away and I can see that the 5sos boys are on the stage now.
