Start from the beginning

I watched as Meghann’s eyes glistened in tears but she dared not cry, I could tell crying in front of this man was the last thing she wanted to do. She didn’t want to seem weak.

The man was tall, at least six foot something, he was built like a tank, but one which hadn’t been used regularly. His muscles seemed to be reserved for only the important situations, possibly like this one.  It was evident that with one punch from this man, you were out for a very long time.

His hair was brown and hung past his ears, framing his distinct cheekbones.

His brown eyes were piercing as they turned to look at me. Another chill passed through me as he did so.

‘And who do we have here? This wouldn’t be the infamous Avery Blake by any chance, would it? I’ve heard many a things about you young lady. Who knew you were friends with my wonderful daughter, Meghann? Now, that’s something rather funny.’ He chuckled.

‘Why is it funny?’ I asked on impulse, trying to bite back on my bitter tone.

He tiled his head to the side slightly as he looked at me. I guess he never expected someone to stand up to him, even being something as little as that.

‘Oh, I simply find it humorous that it is always you, Avery, that gets herself in these situations. It is always you facing Death. And even now, if you had never stuck your nose in our family business, you would have lived. If you hadn’t approached us, I would not have felt the need to dispose of you as well. You see, I was prepared to take my daughter and leave, but instead I heard you first, and then I panicked. You caught me completely off guard. I was definitely not expecting anyone to stumble onto us, especially the notorious Avery Blake. I had to act quickly and so I hid. When I saw you approach, I injected you with what I had left. Luckily I wasn’t confronted with anybody else as I made my way to where we are now.’ He concluded.

What was up with psychopaths? I mean, did they all talk nonstop? Like, okay, you want to show off and make yourself seem much more of a man than you actually are, but when they don’t know when to stop talking, it gets annoying; Corbin being the same.

I felt like getting to him as there was barely a chance we were to escape so why not make the most of it?

‘And where would that be exactly?’

‘Oh, we’re still on school grounds, Avery. I didn’t want to risk traveling any further. Beforehand, I found this little place, by accident really but that’s just a story to remain untold. Anyway, I thought this would be the perfect place to take my lovely daughter and see what I could get out of her. And here we are in an unlikely of endings for the two of you.’ He sighed in mock surprise.

‘I’m not scared of you.’ I say through gritted teeth.

‘Of course you’re not. But you know something, child? Please, just for a second, stop making this about yourself. Let me get back to my daughter.’ And so he turned away from me, just in time for him to miss my sudden, deep blush.

‘Now, where were we?’ he rhetorically asked as smirked before continuing. ‘Ah, yes, we have the little matter of finding out who you told to discuss.’

‘I-I said I didn’t tell anyone! Nobody, I swear! Just let Avery go, she’s got no business I this mess and she doesn’t know anything, just let her go.’ Meghann pleaded, conveniently leaving out the part where she had told me what happened with her step-dad murdering her mother. But what stumped me most was distinctively remembering Meghann saying how the police had caught him.

Before he could respond, I interrupted.

‘No, stop, hold on. She’s lying, I know! I know what happened! But she hasn’t told anyone else, just me. But don’t blame her; I practically dragged it out of her! I-I saw the scar on her back and she had to tell me after that.’
