Sheep need a shepherd to survive. They're very dumb and smelly without someone leading them they die. They either wander off a cliff, can't find food and water, get attacked by predators, or come to some other end they can't save themselves from. So sheep need shepherds to show them the way, to feed them, to leave them and to keep them together. No to mention protect them from predators and thieves trying get at them, a good shepherd will even die to protect their flock of sheep.

God is our shepherd because He protects us. He protects us from the lies of this world and the lies of Satan. He leads us out of the darkness and into His light. He gives us bread of life and living water. God is with us at all times constantly giving support. When we stay with Him no real harm can come to us because if we die we go to Heaven, pain in our bodies is only temporary, and God is there to help with your thoughts. He also died for us to give us mercy and forgiveness just like a good shepherd would die defending their sheep.
