Chapter Two

A light illuminated from the corner of the room showing a dark figure and the bricks behind it. Sounds rustled from one side to another, and the room lit with a dim yellow aura. The feminine silhouette stood in the dark lightly shaking, startled by what was in front of her. Holding a torch, she walked toward the three intruders that gathered on the dusty dirt floor. The hood of a long cloak covered her head and entire body. Black hair shimmered with highlights of gold under the sides of the hood. The dim lighting created shadows across her face showing outlines of a few features. Two midnight blue eyes gleamed under the hood bearing inhuman qualities.

“Why are you three here? There is nothing to steal!” her voice quivered holding back the urge to fight. Silence echoed as the three on the floor was feared to speak. “Answer me now trespassers!” she demanded as the midnight blue eyes changed to a light sunset orange.

Savanna gasped from fright, wondering where she was. Her long black hair was tangled, and her pale grey eyes narrowed. “Um… I don’t know what happened.  Someone stumbled and our things went flying everywhere,” she explained.

“Is that so…” the cloaked woman’s voice trailed off as she walked away. Moments after a lamp was lit everything filled with light. The room appeared to be a basement and had no windows. The furniture in the room was cluttered with miscellaneous objects. The cloaked woman was now in clear view holding a sword straight out.

“Prove to me that you have not come to steal or harm and I shall spare you lives! What are your names?”

Savanna, Shia, and Spence stood slowly with obedience. Their clothes were covered in dust, and eyes were as wide as canyons. Slowly looking at one another they realized that they had no way to prove their innocence.

“Okay, we haven’t come to steal anything or harm anyone. I don’t have any weapon, and I am sure they don’t either. All of our belongings seem to be missing. To tell you the truth, I have no clue where I am. You may search me, but I don’t have anything except for my wallet. Although, I am sure the authorities wouldn’t approve of your threats. I’m an important person, and if I go missing people will know!” he spoke arrogantly hoping to deter the woman from any thoughts of killing him.

The cloaked woman looked at him and began to laugh at his ignorance. He was tall with brown hair and eyes to match. Their clothes looked nothing like what she was use to wearing or seeing. The other woman was taller than the younger one. Her brown hair was pulled back and matted to her head with sweat, her hazel eyes screamed fear.

They don’t seem harmful. She wondered how they managed to get in the basement. After all, it was hidden within a deep forest a few yards away from her home. To her knowledge, nobody even knew where she lived and that she even existed. Mae remembered a time ago when her father sat her down and explained something odd to her.

She remembered the night as if it were yesterday. A cool wind on a sweet night wisped through the shack that was hidden deep in the darkness of a forest. The brown logs stacked intelligently woven into one another stood against the elements. She remembered opening the wood shutters so air could blow through. She and her father called the cabin home. They had lived in the same place since she was knee high to her father, and couldn’t remember living anywhere else.

The exact time was unknown, for lack of a working clock, but it wasn’t late. The moon had not fully risen to midnight. She stood at the glassless window, listening to the songs of the crickets and toads, when her father called her to the table. An old book sat in front of him.
