‘Now, before you all ask, the new principal is named Miss Scarlette Osborne. You will find out more about her when she arrives. She is a wonderful woman and a great success at only thirty years old. She’s taught at one other school and been the principal of another. This will be her third school so please welcome her nicely on Monday. I am sure she will want to hold an assembly on the Tuesday, after a day of settling in.

‘Once again, I am sorry it had to come to this but my ego is insignificant in this situation. I’d rather step back and admit my true reasons than walking away more of a coward. That is all.’ He nodded to my fellow peers before walking away from the crowd, ignoring the calls of the other teachers.

‘Avery! Avery.’ A few people called out as they made their way to me.

I turned around and walked quickly away until I was in the safety of my lonesome self, covered by a shady tree. I heard approaching footsteps and looked up to meet a few eyes.

Meghann, Kiren, Ashton, Cole, Erik and Kimberly advanced on me.

Seriously? Six people? Was that really necessary?

‘I’m sorry Avery.’ A few of them said to me.

‘Yeah, kiddo, we didn’t know…’ Erik admitted. ‘If we had, we would have told you. It’s as big of a shock to you as it is to the three of us.’ He said, motioning towards the three members of staff standing in the group.

‘I know you-we didn’t like him much, but I know everything he’s done and helped you with.’ Cole added with a hopeful smile.

‘He did; and yeah, at first I didn’t really like him much but it changed…I found appreciating for him when he let you stay at this school after finding out about us…and also offering me a lot of help. ‘Course I kind of forced a lot on him because of all my problems and drama…it couldn’t be easy for anyone. It’s my fault that he’s leaving. If I hadn’t put so much pressure and worry on him, he’d still be here!’ I was on the verge of hysteria; but at least the tears weren’t coming…like they hadn’t been coming regularly anymore.

Then everyone started speaking at the same time, but all trying to say the same, comforting things.

‘That’s not true, Av, you had nothing to do with it.’

‘Yeah, he even said it himself; he wasn’t capable of running a school.’

And they continued.

‘Stop!’ I said loudly as the hum of voices abruptly stopped.

‘Don’t try and make me feel better, please! And don’t try and convince me otherwise. It is my fault, if I hadn’t been here to cause all this chaos, then he wouldn’t have even had all this drama and stress holding him back.’

Kimberly butted in before anyone else had the chance. ‘Oh honey, please don’t think that. Alright, you may have had something to do with it, but not in the sense you’re thinking. Sooner or later, someone would have come along and challenged his power and authority; he would have failed then, nonetheless. He was a ticking time bomb, and you only made him see how truly incapable he is of running this school. Some people aren’t meant for this; he will move on and find something else he is even better at.’

I looked up at her as she wrapped her arms around me. She smiled at me reassuringly. I then sighed and took in her words.

‘Thanks, Kim, you’re right…I guess. But I still don’t understand why he has to leave the school…he can still teach here if not run it.’

Everyone froze, contemplating my argument.

‘Avery’s right…he taught once, I’m sure he can do it again.’ Kiren added with a shrug.

‘I don’t know him very well but I think he’s thought about this for a long time. He has been here for over twenty years and it would be excruciatingly hard for him to simply walk away from this school…his respected friends, colleges and students he’s grown close to. But his mind is probably set and I see him as a stubborn man. If you guys were to try and convince him, you’d have to know exactly what to say. I think if we all give it a hundred per cent, I don’t know, I think we may be able to make him stay. I can see he’s important to you, Avery.’ Ashton said.

We all looked at him, most in confused and astonished gazes.

‘Y-yes, you’re right, Ashton. But it sounds like an impossible-‘I tried to say before Cole interrupted. ‘No, I think we can do it. Now here’s what we have to do-‘

The next ten minutes was spent discussing plans and by the end of it, we had a brilliant one.

‘Avery, mind if I walk you back? There’s just something I wanted to talk with you about…’ asked Kimberly with a nervous look.

I immediately put up my guard. ‘W-why? What’s wrong?’ I asked, sounding panicked.

‘No, no, nothing like that. Don’t worry, hun, it’s just something I wanted to put out to you…’ trailed Kimberly.

‘Oh… ugh,’ I said as I looked around at my friends. They all urged me forward. ‘Alright, y-yeah, sure; I’ll see you guys later.’ I waved at them before walking away with my sister at my side.

She stayed weirdly quiet as we headed up to my room. Once we hit the interior of my bedroom, I stopped and turned to her.

‘Okay, Kim, spill.’

She looked hesitant as she reluctantly sat on the edge of my bed. She put a hand through her straight, blonde hair before looking down at her fingers. The whole while she spoke, she fiddled with them in her lap.

‘Here’s the thing…I’ve been thinking this through for a while now and I just wanted to get your thoughts on it. Now before you say anything, it’s not legit…yet. There’s a lot we have to do in order for it to work, if you wanted, but I just wanted to put the idea through.’ She hesitated.

‘Go on.’ I urged her.

‘Avery, I want to try and find mum.’
