‘Go, its fine. I’ll be fine.’

If only he knew.

‘You sure?’ he hesitated.

‘I don’t want you to lose your job because of me. Go. I’ll um call you later or something.’ I shrugged, trying to act nonchalant. But it was hard under his gaze.

‘Thanks, Kiren. And I’m up for that. I’m glad you’re okay.’ He said, winking, before leaving.

I exhaled deeply, with a satisfied smile upon my face. But that was before everything bad in my life came rushing back to me and the remembrance of why I was here entered my mind.

My momentary smile was replaced with a straight, serious look.

Later that day, the doctor had come to see me and we had discussed quite a bit of things. Only about half an hour after the doctor left did Avery, Meghann and Ashton come and visit me.

I was thrilled.

And they were still convinced it was nothing as to why I was here.

We spent the rest of the day talking and hanging around until they were due back on campus.

The nurse had informed me that after some other tests, I was free to leave tomorrow. I wasn’t sure who was going to pick me up, though.

But my curiosity was settles once tomorrow came.

‘Off we go Kiren. You ready?’ came a voice from the doorway.

I turned around from my packing and met those ultra-dark blue eyes from across the room. Leon’s blonde-white hair was spiked up and ruffled. He wore his casual clothes which consisted of a white V-neck (similar to my current black one), and some black skinny jeans. I could see his muscular structure trying to push through his shirt.

I tried to tear my eyes away from his chest and turn back to my packing, in hope he didn’t notice my lingering gaze nor my ambitious smile.

‘Hey, Kiren. You ready?’

‘…ready for what?’ I asked in confusion.

‘Oh…didn’t you hear? I’m taking you back to the academy. I have full permission.’ I could hear the smile through his voice.

‘Oh…c-cool.’ I answered before depositing my phone in my pocket and grabbing my things. I turned towards Leon and realized he was casually leaning against the doorframe; a smirk plastered on his face.

‘Okay, let’s go kid.’

Avery Blake’s POV

The day Kiren came back from the hospital was the day a lot of things changed. For one, people weren’t really sure of how to act. They weren’t sure if they were to show pity or fear. After all, everything always revolved around me but now Kiren too? I think we were labelled as bad luck. But the majority of everyone was welcoming. If he was to walk past a corridor, there would always be at least one person to greet him.

There was also Leon. Kiren had sat me down and we had simply talked; just like old times. He told me about Leon’s visit and how they said they were going to start again. I was happy for him. But I now knew my two best friends weren’t going to be around as much anymore. We all had our relationships to uphold.

Then there was Cole. Every time he looked at me, it looked as though there was some kind of hidden secret…something he didn’t want me to know. But I didn’t want to confront him as I could be hallucinating. And I did love him. If he was hiding something from me, it was for a good reason.

But none of those things matched up to the joy and relief I felt inside. Everything was perfect. More perfect than it had ever been before. No foster parents to abuse me, no Corbin to torment me, no questioning the location of my family anymore, no confusing feelings between Cole and i. Everything was as I had dreamed and hoped for.

If only I knew what would come; what pain and torment would follow. Little did I know this was simply the calm before the storm.
