The rest of the period went by strangely quietly as well as rapidly. By the end of the period, we had all received our own books with the instruction to read them within two weeks.

‘Do what you need to do, hun.’ Meghann said as she gave me a quick pat on the back.

‘What do you mean?’ I asked, caught off guard.

‘Class is over and you’re still here. I can see that desperation in your eyes; you want to go talk to her, and so you should. Just go, we have study now anyway.’ Meghann convinced me.

‘Just text either of us when you’re done and we’ll tell you where we’re at. Good luck, babe.’ Kiren added before him, Ashton and Meghann were off.

I walked up to Kimberly; her expression showed that she had been expecting me.

‘Avery? What’s wrong?’ she asked as I approached her.

‘Oh… um-‘I tried to say before I was cut off by Kimberly. ‘Don’t try and lie to me Avery, I want to know…please.’ She had a pleading tone in her voice as she spoke.

I sighed before planting my butt on a nearby table. I then turned to face my sister before speaking. ‘You’re right…of course.’

She sighed also as she walked up and stood in front of the desk I was sitting on, but not too close that I was able to accidently hit her with my swinging legs.

I opened my mouth, as to speak before Kimberly saved me the trouble.

‘It’s about earlier, isn’t it?’ she asked as she kept her voice composed.

‘Partly.’ I said, biting my lip.

‘Just ignore them, Avery. We’re the latest gossip and so they’ll talk.’ Kimberly said, shrugging it off.

‘I-I know. But they’re being harsher on you than me.’

The tip of her mouth twitched into a small smile. ‘But the thing is, Avery, I deserve anything that comes my way. And if that be small, childish gossip, let it be. I’m just glad karma hasn’t struck me dead.’

‘Don’t say that, Kim, or I’ll actually start to believe you.’ I said, looking doubtful.

She smiled once again, shaking her head slightly. When her eyes found mind, a motherly expression took over. Her smile was pure and soft as her eyes were indulgent and uncontaminated.

‘I deserve worse, Av; you know it as well as I do. But…just don’t listen to me, I don’t want you to worry about old trivial me.’

‘Trivial? You are anything but “trivial”, Kim. You’re my sister, and obviously I’m going to worry about you, just as much as you worried about me when I ran away.’

The room lightened as the position of the clouds changed, allowing the sun’s rays to enter the surroundings. A ray conveniently hit the side of Kimberly’s face; capturing her beauty. Her blonde hair almost sparkled at the touch of sunlight. But she didn’t even wince. I was taken aback by her complexion and angel like formation. But before I could capture it further, it disappeared, leaving no traces; it was as though nothing had happened.

‘Why are you looking at me like that, hun?’ she asked, slightly tilting her head to the side.

‘Oh, never mind. I have to go…need to meet Meghann, Kiren and Ashton. I’ll see you later.’ I said with a small smile which was returned by Kimberly.

‘Bye sweetheart.’

After the confrontation with Kimberly, there wasn’t much of my study period left. Recess went by swiftly as did Maths. A lot of people gave me curious stares, but none seemed mean in any way. By last period, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I guess I just imagined nothing to happen…I thought our past would be forgotten; we truly would be student and teacher. So when I was the first one to enter music –as it was still lunch and I was a bit early – I realised Mr Ford was leaning on his desk, waiting for the class. When our eyes locked, it was as though a stubborn bubble had popped, like I was now fully exposed to the world.
