The Point of No Return {sequel to The Arbitrary life of Avery Blake [teacher]}13

Start from the beginning

‘What’s with everyone?!’ I mumbled frustratingly.

‘Huh?’ Meghann and Kiren asked in confusion.

‘Never mind.’ I said as we all found seat.

The whole English lesson was basically a bludge. She told us we had finished all the needed work for this semester and that we could either read freely or finish off any assignments.

I obviously had done my music task.

Ms Fletcher had been doing everything she could to avoid my gaze. The reason, unknown.

‘Hey, where’s Kiren?’ I asked Meghann.

‘No clue.’ She whispered.

After class, Ms Fletcher called the both of us up after class.

We exchanged a long look before curiously walking over to the teacher.

‘Meghann, A-Avery…sweethearts-‘ she said as she picked up a note which was lying on her table ‘-I’ve been informed that Kiren had an accident and he’s been taken to the hospital. You two are excused for the rest of the day. Everything is already taken care of, just get some of Kiren’s things and you’re free to leave.’ She said with a concerned look.

I was wide-eyed ‘W-what happened?’ I softly asked.

‘I’m not sure, sorry.’ she said, clearly hiding something.

I cursed under my breath as Meghann and I tried to hurry out of the room ‘Oh, and Avery?’ she asked as I turned back around by the doorway ‘Yeah?’ I asked.

‘I’m sorry.’ she asked as I assumed she was talking about Kiren.

‘I-it’s OK.’ I said as I waited a moment longer than necessary as we held eye contact before Meghann pulled me away.

We arrived in an hour give or take or rushed to the receptionist.

‘Kiren Jones, what room?’ I asked.

‘Um…B29.’ She said as she typed on her computer.

‘Thanks.’ we quickly said before searching for his room.

‘I should have gotten there earlier.’ said a familiar voice from inside the room we had just stopped in front.

‘Why is…’ Meghann tried to ask as I shushed her.

‘It wasn’t your fault Cole.’ Kiren said simply.

‘But I’m your mentor…i-I should have known this was going to happen.’

Mentor?

At this point, I swiftly opened the door and entered.

‘Avery, Meghann!’ Kiren said, completely off-guard.

‘What happened?’ I desperately asked, putting what I had momentarily overheard to the back of my mind as I approached Kiren’s bed.

Kiren Jones’ POV

‘What happened? Avery desperately asked me as her face bore shock and fear.

Of course I couldn’t tell her what really had happened, Cole and I had agreed not to.

I couldn’t tell her that the school had assigned Cole to be my mentor when they found out I had cancer. They said he had to always be by my side and I always had to check in with him. All because of the very reason I was in here.

I had had a seizure.

Of course it wasn’t his fault. Actually, if he hadn’t found me, who knows what would have happened to me.

I owed him.

He had been so nice to me these past couple of days. I spoke to him about my problems; he spoke to me about his problems.

I exchanged a quick look with Cole.

‘I fainted and hit my head.’ I tried to lie casually.

It seemed as though Avery didn’t believe me but she didn’t have time to object as Meghann came rushing up to me ‘Oh god! Are you alright now?’ she asked.

‘Y-yeah.’ I lied.

I felt like shit lying to my best friends but it would have made things worse by telling them. Having them constantly watching over me and putting their stress levels through the roof.

Sure, I was going to tell them, but not yet.

‘Is there anything you want?’ Meghann asked.

I tried to hide my smile as I desperately wanted something but I didn’t want to be slack.

‘Well aside from your laptop and clothes and phone and stuff because I have them all her.’ She said as she dropped my bag near my bed.

‘…McDonalds?’ i asked.

Meghann smirked. ‘Sure.’

‘I’ll go too.’ Avery tried to say.

‘No, stay here and keep him company. I’ll be back in fifteen minutes.’ she said before she left, leaving Cole, Avery and myself.

‘I’m going to go get some Coffee. Avery do you want some?’ Cole asked.

‘Y-yeah.’ She said, but there was still clearly tension between them.

‘Avery, go with him.’ I demanded.

I had obviously put her on the spot as she couldn’t say no or she would look mean.

‘O-OK.’ She said.

I gave her a quick wink before they exited.

Cole Ford’s POV

I awkwardly walked down the hospitals corridor with Avery by my side in silence.

‘H-how did you find him?’ she nervously asked.

‘After you left-‘ i said as my expression softened at the memory ‘-I heard a bang outside my door and I rushed to see what it was and Kiren was on the ground.’ I said which wasn’t a total lie.

‘Oh.’ Is all she said.

‘Are you OK now?’ I asked to break the silence as we stopped and I paid for the coffees and we sat down at two waiting cheers secluded around the corner from the rest.

‘I-I think so.’ She answered as she traced her finger along the top of the cup.

‘Just remember, I’m always here.’ I said reassuringly.

‘No.’

‘No what?’ I hesitantly asked.

‘It’s too difficult…’ she whispered.

‘It’s my fault…things shouldn’t be this difficult. I should be your teacher and you should be able to see me freely for anything without the awkwardness and the restrictions.’ I said.

‘It’s not your fault…neither of us could help it.’ She mumbled as her cheeks turned scarlet.

We stayed silent as both our heads were full of what could have been.

‘I wish things could be simpler.’ I said as I sipped my coffee.

‘Me too.’ She agreed awkwardly.
