‘Cole, is this true?’ Jim asked.
‘No! He’s lying… he’s just trying to protect me! It was all me, I forced myself onto him!’ I nearly screamed as tears were already making their way down my cheeks as my cheeks were flushed.
Principal Maletos looked highly confused and looked as though he didn’t know which way was up.
He opened his mouth in preparation to reply but nothing came out until a couple of seconds later. ‘What-um… m-my office, now, both of you.’ He said as he put a hand through his hair.
I had been trying to avoid Cole’s gaze ever since Principal Maletos had intruded on us. I kept my eyes to the floor, anywhere but Cole.
I looked up at principal Maletos and he was ushering us to go in front of him. I went first, trying to get a good distance in front of Principal Maletos… and possibly Cole as my head was spinning.
What was going on?
What was I going to do?
I couldn’t think, oh god I couldn’t think. As much as I tried to think up an excuse, nothing was coming to me.
Teenagers were everywhere as lunch was still in progress.
People kept giving us curious glances as they proceeded in their whispers.
‘Avery? What’s going on?’ Meghann asked as she quickly ran up to me.
‘What do you think?’ I asked as I motioned her to look behind me.
Meghann’s face was blank ‘Huh? What… oh god! No!’ she screamed in her whispering voice.
I simply dropped my eyes to the ground and nodded in defeat. ‘Crap Avery, what are you going to do?’ she eagerly asked.
‘I honestly don’t know… I’ll find you as soon as I can. Just tell my teachers I’m in the office or something.’ I spoke with dread.
Meghann quickly hugged me before assuring she would and hesitantly walking away, looking back at me a few times before she finally disappeared.
I was surprised though; surprised that Cole hadn’t even tried to speak to me. Maybe he was angry at me; maybe he never wanted to speak to me again because it was my fault that his career is now in jeopardy. I couldn’t blame him though… it really was my fault.
When I finally reached the interior of the office, the receptionist gave me a questioning look as I stood there and waited for the two men to catch up.
‘Hello Avery, what are you doing here?’ Naomi asked as she walked out of her office, probably in need of some food.
I bowed my head in shame. ‘N-nothing.’ I spoke softly.
‘What-‘ she tried to say until Cole and Principal Maletos finally walked in and a blank look crossed her features until her expression changed into one of understanding.
‘Avery, you can wait out here, Cole and I will be a few minutes.’ Principal Maletos said as he walked into his office with Cole awkwardly trailing behind him. He shot me a final glance of an unreadable expression before disappearing into the room.
‘Oh Avery…’ Naomi whispered.
I gave her a strained smile but my face was still teary. ‘Can I help with anything?’ she asked softly as I sat in one of the waiting chairs.
She took a seat next to me, placing one of her hands on my shoulder.
‘How badly can we get into trouble?’ I asked, ignoring her question.
