‘Avery… tell me.’ He said softly.

I let out a sigh ‘I-It was Kimberly…’

The next 10 minutes were spent explaining the whole issue with Kimberly and then yesterday night-mornings events. Erik listened with a calm façade the whole time. When I was finally over, Erik spoke ‘I… well I really don’t know what to say…’

‘Please… just say something… tell me I’m a bad person at least.’ I said desperately.

‘Avery… you’re not a bad person… but Kimberly, seriously? I never would have expected that. A-and are you sure it was a smart move to… you know do it with Cole? Especially now because Kimberly knows… oh god, what have you gotten yourselves into.’ Erik shook his head at me with an amused expression.

I gave a small smile, continuing to munch on my chips and quietly sip my Coke.

‘Anyway, I should be off. Planning on meeting Cole and go out and play some pool or something. You’re welcome to join us.’ Erik said kindly.

‘Pool? Seriously?’ I asked with a smirk.

‘In a matter of fact, yes. So you going to join us or not?’

‘Nuh, it’s OK. I was just going to go for a walk or something…’

‘Fair enough. Bye!’ announced Erik as he strolled away. I was left seated alone once again.

Once my chips and drink were empty, I through them into the bin and began heading into no particular direction.

I took in my surroundings in awe as it was truly a beautiful day.

I realized I was in the lonely back oval in the school. There was no shade what so ever and the sun was even stronger from this angle. I let out a sigh as I continued on my journey to nowhere.

‘Avery! Glad I caught you.’ came that horrid voice I had been dreading for days now. I slowed in my walk until I finally stopped and turned around to face her with my guilt stricken but somehow still furious face.

‘Yes?’ I tried to say confidently but I knew my face portrayed otherwise.

‘Have fun the other night did you?’ Kimberly asked with a little more meaning behind her ‘kind’ eyes. She stopped right in front of me and held her ground with some authority.

‘Which night would that be Ms Fletcher?’ I asked, hoping I held innocence.

‘You know perfectly well Ms Blake.’ She said, equalling my tone.

I put a hand through my long hair and re-met her gaze.

‘Look, what do you want from me?’ I said exasperatedly.

‘Oh Avery, haven’t you learnt anything about me yet? You went after my man when he was obviously into me. And also the bit how you’re very easily hateable helps.’

I was almost certain that my face was enveloped in hatred.

‘I’m only 18 for freak sake! Leave me the hell alone! So what, I like Cole and yes we were together that night but it’s not illegal! We’re in love! And I’ve done nothing to you!’ I said as tears started running down my cheeks. I turned around, away from her to hide my tears.

Silence hung in the air as I cried. ‘In love.’ She laughed. ‘You silly child. You don’t know the first thing about love.’

I inhaled deeply before I turned to meet her unreadable expression ‘How don’t I know about love? How, please tell me because I love him and there is nothing more! I’m sorry he doesn’t like you back but there’s nothing I can do about it and it’s not my fault! J-just please don’t tell anyone about… us! Please!’ I cried out as I stormed away, leaving an open mouthed Kimberly in my tracks.

‘Avery! Avery!’ I heard. I slow to a stop and find the source of the sound.

‘M-Meghann!’ I said, trying to sound normal.

Meghann came running towards me ‘What’s wrong?’ she asked.

‘N-nothing…’ I lied through my teeth.

Meghann pulled me around to look at her as her face portrayed concern. ‘Avery… seriously.’

Then, out of nowhere, I pulled Meghann into an oversized hug and sobbed out all my tears. She patted my back and tried to comfort me.

I sat her down and for an hour, explained to her the source of all my issues and drama, including Cole, Corbin, the counselling and Kimberly. She didn’t speak; she just sat and listened to me with her full attention.

‘You may not believe me…’ I said softly as the last of my tears had gone a while ago.

‘Avery, I really don’t know what to say… does Kiren know?’ she asked sounding concerned.

‘Just tell me you believe me and you don’t hate me… and he knows some of it but not all of it like the Kimberly factor of my problems I guess.

‘You should tell somebody!’

‘N-no I can’t… then she could tell everyone about me and Cole…’

‘And that would be a bad thing?’ Meghann asked.

‘He could get fired and I could get expelled…’

‘Well, looking from my perspective… Ms Fletcher is bound to tell the school, sorry to say unless you majorly suck up to her…’

‘I-I can’t Meghann, that’s what she’d expect me to do.’

Meghann sighed before she spoke ‘Avery, you have nothing to lose, honestly. Look, let’s just go out somewhere; it’s Saturday and why not? It will give you time to think and it can be a girls night out, so what do you say?’ she asked, going back to being cheery.

I rolled my eyes playfully at her and gave in ‘Alright… to the mall?’

‘To the mall!’ she declared as we linked arms and skipped to the car park and sang to The Wizard of Oz.
