it felt good to not paint
not write my poems
but lay here
reading my book
i was under the umbrella
getting dark
my newly red dyed hair
was under a hat
and the dark oil
was making my olive skin golden bronze
I tanned quickly
I found another beach not too far
a bus ride and a ten minute walk
with techno beats
electricity in the air
DJ right next to this long bar hut terrace
it looked like a dance club
with exaggerated electric blue sofas
young gorgeous men playing racquetball
stunning Greek women wearing gold and silver bikinis
you would not think they were suffering from an economic crisis
they still managed to party and have a joie de vivre
I met a young girl named Eleni from Athens
we hit it off right away
when she saw me drinking beer at eleven a.m.
and smoking Marlboros

she said
ellinitha eise?

The typical Greek question wanting to know if I was Greek

of course I said half-Greek
and she replied the
the stronger genes
look how gorgeous you are
In perfect English
thank god because my Greek was not
as good as it used to be

I was one of them

being half-Greek
full Greek
it was in my blood

she introduced me to her friends
and just like that
I made friends
I never had

why was it so easy here?
and so hard in real life?

My phone pinged

2 more days until Jared arrived

show me where you are

I snapped a photo of the sea
my drink
sent it to him

now your bikini

I took a selfie
and the girls joined me

I sent it off

my new friends

Stunning
you made friends? Amazing
see you in 2 days
have fun

see you soon

Life was good.

I felt happy under the sun
joking around

you have to come out with us tonight
Eleni said

Sure
take my cell number
the sand was too hot to stand on

Suddenly out of nowhere
acrobats appeared on top of two trees
two women performing a circus show
full of sex appeal
dressed in bikinis
and tights
swinging like trapeze artists.

I could live here, I thought.
Art was in the air.
