Everything seemed so dark, even the sunshine was dull. The church bells which usually rang for weddings and all the other happy occasions were now ringing for sadness. The priest was chanting prayers as Samantha's mother sobbed the long grievous sighs. She had abandoned her only child for five years and now she had to see her like this.

There were barely five people in the funeral. We were all she had.

David stood next to me, his eyes closed as he whispered a few prayers.

Samantha's coffin was buried under the ground and her mother couldn't handle it. She burst out into tears, causing my eyes to become watery too. A stream of tears rolled down my eyes as I looked down.

"Hey." David whispered. "Don't cry. Everything in life belongs to God, right?" He slowly rubbed my back.

"She didn't deserve this." I kept my head on his chest as his arm snaked around me.

There was a moment of silence when the only sound was Samantha's mothers sobs. We all kept the flowers on her grave and all the memories I had with her came to my mind.

"I need to go." I wiped my tears and turned around to leave.

"You can't go." David said.

I looked at him but he just stood expressionless and a bit pale. All the colour from his face had drained. "They might come after you. It's better if you stay with me or your parents."

"I'll stay with my parents."

"Areesh, why are you being like this?" He grabbed my arm and pulled me closer. Our faces were so close. He had forgotten that there were other people around.

My jaw dropped. "Me? I'm the one who's changing?"

His head slightly nodded and his face became dull. My hand reached for his cheek but his skin was boiling.

"David? Are you alright?" I quickly moved away my hand.

"Yeah. But I feel a little bit feverish." He mumbled with his weak voice.

"Little bit? No! You are boiling! We need to get you home!" I moved away from him and dragged him out of the graveyard.

It was a bit odd to see him follow me like that without a word. His car was near by so we didn't have to walk a lot.

"Can you drive?" I asked him.

He got the car keys out of his pocket and pushed me aside. "Yeah. I'm not that sick. Now get in the car."

"Meu Deus... (Oh my God)" Maria gasped. "I keep telling you to take care of yourself. You have another match next week." She brought the soup for David and kept it on the end table beside the bed on which he was lying down restlessly.

"Feed him this soup." She left with a frown on her face and David chuckled at her.

"Same old Maria. She always gets angry when I'm sick." He looked at me and patted on the other side of the bed, indicating me to sit next to him. "Don't just stand there, come sit."

I did as he said and he moved closer to me. Keeping his head on my shoulder, he closed his eyes and mumbled "Don't leave."

"I won't..." No matter how hurt I felt, his voice and his face never failed to make me feel better. "David, how did you know that Samantha and I would be there?"

It took him a minute to find the right words. "I knew something was wrong. I couldn't stop thinking about you when I was in Paris, so I took the earliest flight to Brazil. When I came here, I first checked your house but you weren't there and the only thing that came to my mind was the address that Samantha told me that day."

"It was Johnny's house." I mumbled.

The door opened and David lifted up his head from my shoulder. Maria came with the medicine.

"You haven't even touched that soup!" She kept the medicine on the table and picked up the bowl of soup and the spoon. "Open up your mouth!"

"Areesh can feed me." David smiled at me. Maria handed me the soup but she didn't leave the room and looked at me as if she didn't trust me.

I took a spoon of soup and moved it towards David's mouth. He sipped it, his eyes glued on me. It made me slightly blush.

Maria was satisfied so she left the room.

"This tastes weird." He coughed.

I filled the spoon again. "You have to finish it."

He sighed and opened his mouth. Sometimes he acted like a baby and it was cute. There was a smile stuck on my face the whole time when I was feeding him the soup. I didn't realise it.

"That soup was horrible but I'm starting to feel better." He stated and I kept the empty bowl on the end table.

He kept his head on the pillow and stared at the ceiling. "You don't need to go to your parents. This place has plenty of rooms."

"David, I don't want to cause you any more trouble."

"And I don't want anyone to hurt you or make you feel bad." He tried to hold my hand but I moved it away.

Something kept bothering me. Being with him now was making me nervous, no matter how much I enjoyed his company.

I quickly changed the topic. "I need to get coffee for myself."

He smiled. "There's a Starbucks down there right around the corner. But Maria can make-"

"I'll be back." I got up and left his room. My heart was aching and I didn't know why.

I sat down on the chair, waiting for my coffee. I never really liked crowded cafés but this one was peaceful.

"Hey!" A guy with a blue beanie and a scarf covering his mouth came to me. His accent was a typical Brazilian one but his voice was familiar. "Aren't you David's friend?"

"Yeah, I guess." I folded my arms as I peered at his face, trying to recognise him.

"It's me, Oscar! Oscar Dos Santos." He slightly removed his scarf to reveal his face and yes, it was him. He pulled it up again.

"Oh hey, come sit!" A huge grin formed on my face.

"David's in Paris right?" He sat down. "It gets very boring without him."

"No." I shook my head. "He's here."

He was surprised. "Really? But I saw him play in Paris that day."

My shoulders shrugged. "He's here right now. He'll go back soon I guess."

He nodded his head. Something made me want to ask him about David. I wanted to know more about David's life. And about Sara. Maybe Oscar knew about her.

"Oscar, I want to ask you something." There wasn't any hesitation in my voice this time.

"Yeah?" He said as he fixed the beanie on his head.

I could feel myself getting tense for some reason. "Did David ever tell you about a girl named Sara?"

At my question, Oscar started to laugh. For a moment I was surprised but then he told me that he knew her really well.

"David and Sara were dating last year." He kept his arm on the table.
