David's Point Of View

"Move aside! These people are badly injured!" My head was dizzy and my eyes were still shut closed but these voices were unfamiliar.

"Leve-os para a sala de emergência! (Take them to the emergency room)" Said another voice.

Where was I? Why were all these people shouting?

It felt like if my eyes were glued. They wouldn't open. Even if I tried so hard, they were still closed.

"His pulse is normal."

"Is it possible that he's in coma?"

Coma? No way. I could hear them.

Slowly my eyes opened and I looked at the people around me with a blank expression.

"Are you hurt? Como você está se sentindo agora? (How are you feeling now?)"

"I'm fine. Why are you asking?"

"Don't you remember? You had a car accident."

Car accident? I closed my eyes to recall everything.

"David! Look out!" She screamed and I turned the car at a great speed but failed. The car which came from the other side had crashed into ours. It was a calamitous accident and she had hit her head in the glass.

"Is she okay?" I felt myself shouting. "Is Areesh alright? Tell me!"

"She-" A doctor hesitated "We are trying our best. However the guy from the other car is safe."

"I don't care about him!" I sat up straight.

"Please calm down."

"No! I don't want that girl to die because of me! She was innocent and she had done nothing to deserve this!"

"We just need to do some tests to see if you're alright, then we can go and-"

"No, go check on her. Right now!"

The doctors looked at each other and nodded before leaving the room.

"Can you sign this for me?" One of the doctor came forward and handed me a paper. He looked like a young boy, barely in his twenties.

"Aren't you too young to be a doctor?" My hands reached for the paper and pen in his hands and he giggled.

"I get that a lot but I'm twenty two. Who was she by the way?" He looked at me, eager for my answer.

"A friend." That was my simple reply as I handed him the signed paper.

"Oh. Sorry for bothering you. I'll drop by later." He hurried out of the room.

I buried my head in my hand and felt something on my forehead. It was an injury. Fortunately my legs and arms were okay. My clothes were lying on the chair so I quickly changed into them.

~

"David Luiz! You are not supposed to be out of your room!" The same young doctor stopped me but I continued walking and ignoring him.

"Tell me where she is." I sighed. The boy tried to catch up with me, he was quite slow.

"The emergency room, it's right around the corner."

"What's your name?" My footsteps slowed down and he finally caught up with me.

"Fran." He held out his hand, slightly panting.

I shook his hand and he led me to the emergency room. This hospital was strange. In some corridors, it was a chaos and in some corridors, it was so peaceful that one couldn't recognise it was the same hospital.

He stopped and pointed at the door with the letters 'EMERGENCY ROOM' written on it.

"You can't go inside. Wait for someone to come from there." Saying this, he rushed to another corridor.

I took a seat and prayed to God. Prayed for her to be safe. Why did I drag her into this? She could've lived a simple life and this would've never happened if she didn't meet me. I'm the one who should be blamed for everything.

The doors opened and a doctor came out.

"Is she okay?" I stood up from my place.

The doctor nodded with a worried look. "God has saved her...but she..." She took a deep breath "She's in a coma. I'm sorry."

No. That couldn't be possible.

"She hit her head on the glass really badly. There were chances for her to lose her memory but fortunately that didn't happen. She will be able to hear you."

Her face came to my mind. She used to be so cheerful and caring.

I stepped in her room and saw her lying there. Like an angel resting after a lot of hard work.

Just few hours ago, she was with me, smiling and talking.

Her face which turned pink and red when she smiled, was now full of bruises and injuries.

I sat down beside her bed and held her hand. "You can hear me." The tears were filled on the corners of my eyes. "I know you can." Grabbing her hand, I slightly pecked my lips on the back of her hand.

"I will blame myself forever. This happened because of me. I will never ever forgive myself if anything else happens to you. Please get better." My tears had started dropping down from my eyes.

Suddenly there was a beeping noise made by the machine and the number on the screen was dropping down.

86...84...73....60 then 54

"Doctor!" I shouted as I jumped up and rushed to the door.

"Move aside!" There were three doctors who hurried inside the room. One of them pushed me out and closed the door.

I stood there, feeling weak, feeling guilty, feeling helpless against the power of my God. He was the only one who could save her now.

~

"Can you sign these papers?" A nurse handed me some documents.

"I'm not her relative. Both of us were only friends. Nothing more."

"Oh. Do you know any of her relative?"

"Her parents."

I gave their number to the nurse who called them immediately and they arrived in about 10 minutes.

"Is that David?" Her mother pointed at me and I walked to them.

"I'm sorry. It happened because of me. Areesh is in coma because of me. I couldn't save her, I tried to turn the car but it was too late."

"It's okay son." Her father hugged me while her mothers eyes were full of tears. They rolled down her face but she dared not to make a sound.
