Worth More

Detrick couldn't believe that her response to saying he loved her was a simple shrug. Was he not worth more than a shrug? He was aware he made her mad, but where was her mind, or more importantly where was her heart? Was she that invested in Shandon? Thoughts of doubt began to race through Detricks mind a mile a minute. He needed to speak up before he walked out.

"A shrug Dessiah? Is that all I get?" He asked.

"What would you prefer I say?"

"Technically you didn't say anything! You know what don't even bother. I'm trying to be the bigger person and- "

"Bigger Person?! You're the only person that is wrong in this situation!"

"How am I the only one wrong?" Detricks voice rose to match hers.

"Detrick you are controlling, spiteful and stubborn!"

"How am I controlling? Shit if only I was maybe you wouldn't have your lips on these other niggas!" Detrick yelled jumping to his feet.

"So that's what this is about, Shandon right? You think keeping me here in Tokyo will keep me away from him."

"No but I didn't realize you were in such a hurry to get back to him in the first place but thanks for clearing that up."

"Grrrr Detrick what is wrong with you? He is a non-factor and you're just to pigheaded to see that. There is nothing going on between him and I."

"Then why do you want to go home so bad?" His voice calmed in a tone of curiosity and doubt. Dessiah stood in front of him to explain..

"Detrick, I have Delaney and she has school."

"There's great schools here." He retorted.

"That maybe so but our life is there. I'm not trying to get away from you and I feel like that's what you're afraid of happening." Detrick looked down at his hands like a remorseful child.

"Dessiah we really do have to stay for the business a bit longer. That's not a lie. However I have to be honest I am wondering what's going to happen between us when we go back to the states? Will there even be an Us?" Dessiah faintly smiled hearing his worry and with full appreciation for his vulnerability. Taking his hands in hers she lifted his chin to meet her eyes.

"Yes. I will be honest with you there is a lot that I have going on and have to take care of but I promise the only changes I expect to happen will be for the better and not the worse. I genuinely care about you. Even when you get on my nerves and I want to hit you upside your head but I can't get enough of you. I can't wait to see you every day and there is no one else I would rather be with here in Tokyo. But De you can't control me. My Ex did that to me for so long and I refuse to go back to that."

"I wasn't trying to control you. I.... just want you to myself. Well you and Delaney of course." He smiled.

"That's fine but sending Shandon away was childish and possessive. You have to trust me. I know that he and I had that moment in the park and I let him know where you and I stood. I didn't keep it from you. Although it shouldn't have happened it did and I apologize but please don't punish me."

"I am still pissed about that 'Siah I'm not gonna lie. Him kissing those lips, hell they belong to me!" Dessiah smiled.

"I'm sorry Detrick, I really am. We have to work on trusting one another more each day."

"Dessiah I love you and Delaney so much and I have to be honest I can't handle being hurt again. With you I'm in this fully and I just need to know that you're just as present as I am."

"I am."

"I need to hear you say it." He anxiously bit his bottom lip.

"Detrick I am here with you. My heart is here with you. I need time to let my guard down completely but I want to reassure you that you are worth putting forth the work to let it down." He smiled brightly at her.

"Baby I can't wait to show you how worth it you are." Pulling her into his arms he kissed her senseless. Dessiah entwined her arms around his neck. To people who argued like cats and dogs were simply filled with a deep rooted passion for one another.

"Mommy!" Delaney called out from the front of the bed. Walking towards them Detrick let go of Dessiah and raced to Delaney swooping her in his arms.

"Hey Laney."

"Hi De." Delaney responded groggily. "What are you doing here?" She asked.

"I came to talk to your mommy. She was mad at me so I had to-

"Detrick!" Dessiah interjected. He looked at her sly.

"... I had to come and apologize. Plus I haven't had a chance to read you that new book I got for you."

"The one about the swan?"

"Yep." Delaney was now on his hip walking back to the bed where she just climbed out of. Detrick reached for the book from the inn table and began reading to her once she was tucked in under the covers.

Dessiah went back to the couch since she had a moment to think. It immediately crossed her mind that she would need to have a talk with Detrick about all she found out tonight. For now she was prepared to let it wait until it was all resolved.
