"Are you feeling any better yet ?" Marco asked while he stroked my hand .
"Yeah , thanks." I grimaced as the pain subsided some more.
"I guess it's a good thing we took that trip when we did." He said, trying to lighten the mood as I tried my best to focus on him. By the time we got here , I was already at 8 centimeters dilated. The doctor's called it a miracle for me holding out this long before coming , and that I was 'brave ' but at this point I really regret not waking him sooner. I've long passed the point of no return , and I now had to face the consequences of my actions and have this baby without any medication.
"Yeah , I guess. " I said through a breath trying not to blow him off completely.
"You got this . You're so strong and brave Alice. I love you so much. " Marco said leaning up and placing a peck to my lips.
"Thanks. I love you too. " I said mustering a smile as I looked over at him.
"I can't believe it. He's going to be born today." He said in disbelief as it all hit me at once too. I knew he was going to be born today the moment my body told me , but I didn't fully realize to the extent that he was going to be born today. If that even makes sense... I never thought this day could come sooner , but now that it has I'm not sure I was ready for it.
"What's wrong ?" I asked while the nurse checked on me again .
"Nothing. I think you're just about ready. When I say , I need you to take a deep breath for me Alice and give it your all. Okay?" She said while I nod my head and looked over at Marco terrified .
"Marco, I'm scared. " I admitted while he held my hand in both of his , placing a kiss to it.
"Me too. But I'm right here. Look at me," he said as I looked back up at him. " you got this." He said right before the nurse counted me down.
After my third push of nothing really happening, I was beyond exhausted, in so much pain and so mad at Marco for putting me in this situation in the first place.
"This is all your fault!" I yelled out while trying my best to get this baby out of me.
"I know. I'm sorry. "
"No ! You don't know. Why did you do this to me !? It hurts..." The anger turning into sadness as I fell back taking a breather.
"I'm sorry baby." He said looking over at the nurse telling him that this was all normal.
"I hate you !" I yelled out as I gave another big push while the nurse finally told me I was crowning.
"I hate you , I hate you , I hate you !" I kept repeating with each push as he didn't seemed fazed by my harsh words or iron grip on his hand, as he just continued to try his best to encourage me -even though I don't remember a single word he said to me - right before I blew out a breath and the sweet cries of our baby boy was heard throughout the room.
Falling back exhausted, I was instantly met with his small body on my chest as they cleaned him up. And at that moment , I had forgotten all of the pain he had caused me . I was filled with so much joy and love that nothing else seemed to have mattered.
"He's perfect. " Marco said , leaning up and placing a kiss to my lips while I couldn't help but shed a tear. He really was perfect. He had everything that was perfect of the two of us , from my cute nose down to Marco's full lips . He was truly precious.
"He is. Thank you for him . I don't really hate you. I hope you know that." I said wiping my tears as he just smiled loving down at us.
"I know." He said with the biggest smile while they took him from my chest to be measured , leaving Marco and I longingly stare after him.
"I can't believe he's really here." Marco said while they placed him back -fully cleaned- on my chest as Marco stroked his finger across his back saying; "Hi there"
"Me too." I said while I watched him look down at him with so much love in his eyes. I could tell he was going to be a great father. Gang leader or not. He had enough love in him for the both of us.
As everything around us started settling down more and it just being the three of us , I couldn't help but give into sleep . And neither could Marco. I woke up to him talking on the phone as I looked over at our baby boy sleeping soundly next to me , right before Marco looked over at me and hung up.
"Who's that ?" I asked curious - patting the side of the bed - as he sat down next to me.
"Just Tom. I asked if he could bring some fresh clothes for me."
"Oh , that's nice." I said while I laid down in his arm.
"Yeah , we should probably name that little guy huh?" He said looking over at the clipboard where we had to fill in his details.
"Yeah. " I said laughing while the baby stirred in the bassinet as I picked him up and placed him between us. "So what are we going to name you ?"
"How about ... " Marco said looking at him to see if the name would fit him.
"Dante."
"Dante Romano... I love it." I said with a smile looking down at him. " hi there Dante. I'm your mommy." I said while he let out a yawn making Marco and I smile. Looking over at him , I leaned up and placed a kiss to his lips.
"What was that for ?" He asked with a smile pulling back.
"Just , I love you. So , so much."
