"Oh, come on!" She begged, our arms linked together like we were sisters sharing traveling pants. "It's not like you're starting now, right? And so what if you're late? I know Bang Ahjussi, I'll talk to him for you!"
It was starting to be very clear to me why Namjoon couldn't ever reject her. It was hard to argue with someone as convincing and congenial as she was. She was being a lot nicer to me than I would have been to her too. It was so infuriating, because all I wanted to do was spit in her face and run.
"Well... Okay. One cup of coffee."
When I finally gave in, Jihye squealed with so much joy I thought she was going to leap. We went to the cute cafe across the road from BigHit and ordered ourselves some lattes. Mine Matcha and Jihye a Chai. We sat across each other on the aesthetic table in silence as we slowly enjoyed our drinks. After exchanging our names and occupations, there wasn't much else for us to say. I was actually surprised that she let slip about Namjoon not talking to her, but then again, it may have been a ploy so that I would feel sorry for her.
Maybe I'm overthinking this.
"So, umm.. Why do you think Namjoon sunbae is avoiding you?" I asked, precariously playing along and trying to be polite. I hadn't exactly asked him what he was doing to send Jihye a message, and for all I know he could still be texting her, just without her contact saved on his phone.
"Well," Jihye sighed and pouted her face. Even when she's being candid, she's photogenic. "he just hasn't returned my calls, and even the other day.. When I was visiting with my colleagues, he just seemed different."
I guess Namjoon has kept his word.
"Buuuut.... enough about me!" Her expression suddenly changed to one of excitement that was on par with her earlier squeal. A cheeky grin brandished on her face. "You like Namjoon right?"
"W-what?" I stuttered, completely taken aback. I had never even met Jihye before, and in our first proper conversation she was asking this point blank. "I don't-"
"It's okay, I can tell!" Her genuine smile still on her face as she took a sip out of her latte. "I'm just saying, I'll be rooting for you, Y/N!"
"W-what?" was all I could mutter again. I had no idea what she was saying or what her angle was. It was hard not to trust her at face value, but with all the stories I've heard and the hell she had put Namjoon through, I was conflicted.
"Yeah, I mean you seem like a great girl, and not at all like a crazy fan who is just after their fame." She said. I was unsure if she was serious or not. "That makes you better than like 80% of the general population by the way.."
"Oh sure.." I managed, like she had just said that drinking diet coke instead of coke was a healthy lifestyle choice.
Throughout all this, her soft smile was unwavering, backing up her girl next door persona. But instead of continuing her rant, she paused, took a deep breath, and looked away. I followed her gaze and realised that she was scrutinising a couple seated not too far from us, all lovey dovey and adorably taking selfies.
"But you know how in those romantic movies, and.. and TV shows, and books.. how the cute guy always notices the awkward, ugly girl... or how if the hunk hasn't texted the shy girl in days it's actually because he's busy and he's head over heels in love with her? I mean 'busy' is not just an excuse?"
Like the rest of this conversation, I was clueless in where she was going with this, so I just sat there quietly, hoping she would get to her point fast enough before I lost track.
"Or what about the guys who actually like it when the girl makes the first move or calls first after a date? What I'm saying is.. " Realising she was rambling, Jihye reeled herself back in. "that never happens."
