"i found him." el says, blood trickling down from her nose.

"where is he?" i ask, referring to hopper.

"woods."

"woods?" lucas asks. the static from the tv hisses behind him.

"he's with...will's mom." el answers.

"my-my mom?" will leans towards her.

"what are they doing?" max asks, her eyebrows furrowed.

"ill...annoy. they're going to ill-annoy." el says slowly.

a knock from the door interrupts us and i hear mrs. wheeler's voice from upstairs.

"mike! breakfast!" she yells.

"not now, mom!" mike yells back before turning to el, softening his voice. "illinois? illinois, like the state? the state of illinois?"

el shrugs. "ill-annoy." she stammers.

we look around at one another before max stands up.

"alright, let's get you cleaned up." she says, taking el's hand. follow them to the small bathroom and max grabs a washcloth from the cabinet.

she wets it a little before turning to el and wiping the blood from her nose. el looks in the mirror, examining her bruise from where billy had choked her.

she looks over at me and traces her index finger along the bruise.

"does it still hurt?" max asks us.

"only when i talk." el says, turning back to her.

"me too." i agree, wincing a little as el continued comparing our bruises.

"well, it's a good thing you're not mike, then." max chuckles. "blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. and you'd be in constant pain."

as max goes back to wiping the blood off of el's nose, we hear the boys talking from the other room.

"what are they still doing in there?" mike asks.

"i don't know." lucas replies. his mouth seemed to be full. "girls just like hanging out in bathrooms."

i roll my eyes even though he couldn't see me.

"why?" mike asks.

"i mean, i don't know."

"they're conspiring against me." mike says in an agitated tone.

"that's what you're concerned about now?!" will snaps.

"it's not my main concern. it's just a sub-concern." mike argues.

"i thought it was already over." will says.

"it's not over, okay? we're just taking a break."

"she said she dumped your ass." will says. "that doesn't sound like a break. plus, you ruined things with y/n too."
