58: Sleepless Night
(6/6/19)

A thousand worries burn like candles' flames
   Singeing my thoughts with premonitions ill,
   For in your strength of spirit lies my will
To keep my spirits high on lofty aims;
But luckless Fate, who loves to play his games,
   Sought out to try his wicked deeds on you
   And laid you low before we even knew
What struck us with a target on our names;
But even as you lay apart in shambles
    With foot and back stretched o'er the burning fire,
Sinking us deep in seen and unseen troubles
   Just as the flick'ring wisps of hope expire,
      I'll graft you new against the face of Chance
      With lines of rhyme to trap Fate's evil glance.

(To be continued...)

A/N: This sonnet is for my mom, who's in the hospital right now.
