22: Autumn in the Desert
(Blank Verse)

There are no changing autumn leaves
That paint this landscape brilliant shades—
Orange, green, red, yellow and gold!
There are no canopies of shade
Or blankets full of fallen foliage
To carpet out this barren scape.
There is no breeze to shake this place
Of limestone, shale and salt pans,
Of blackjack pines and junipers,
Of coachwhips, yucca palms and blackbush,
Of sagebrush, catclaws, greasewoods, cacti,
Of desert brooms and desert pearls,
Of winterfat and desert willows.

And yet beyond these distant ranges,
Surrounded by a chain of mountains,
Our desert autumn is a painter
Painting the skies above our heads
In astral blues and reds and golds
And misty purples in the haze
Of fleeting dawns and lingering twilights.
As summer fades and winter looms,
Our autumn skies shall never fade
As we that age shall fade away.
Our autumn is a brilliant sage,
The painter of our desert sky!

A/N: This poem is based on a poetry prompt in one of the forums on this site... I know that autumn is usually associated with areas with lost of trees and falling leaves... This poem puts a different spin on autumn by placing it in the Mojave Desert, specifically Las Vegas where I live... Even deserts their have autumns, you know...
