Chapter 18

"Just call me if something happens . . ." habilin ni Gideon sa akin habang inaayos niya ang kaniyang bag.

I chewed on my bottom lips. "Gid . . ."

"Yeah?" nag-angat siya ng tingin at bumaba ito sa aking tiyan. I'm still one month pregnant and no one will still notice it. "Make sure to follow the advice of your doctor, Mallory. You're carrying a child for the first time. Be extra careful."

I swallowed. "I know." nilapitan ko siya at mahigpit na niyakap na siyang ikinagulat nito.

"Thank you." I whispered in his ears.

Ever since he rescued my mother and I from that horrible accident, Gideon never left my side. He was with me when I was at my lowest and he did not judge me once.

He ruffled my hair. "It's nothing, really. I got really fond of you and I respect your mother so much, Mallory. I know you're going to be great, just like her."

Tumango ako. "Thanks, Gid, really. Mag-iingat ka sa biyahe mo."

"Yeah, I'll give you a call once I've arrived at the Philippines. Di bale, darating din naman si Leon dito bukas ng umaga. Too bad I can't see him. I just really need to get back to the Philippines."

"Sure."

"Send him my regards."

"Yeah, I will."s

He pinched my cheeks before he grabbed his suitcase and headed out of the door. Nagtatawanan sina Suki at Sierra sa labas ng bahay at napatingin sa kaniya nang lumabas na kaming dalawa.

"Oh, you're leaving already?" Suki asked, eyeing his suitcase.

"Well, yeah. I have business to attend in the Philippines."

Tipid lamang siyang nginitian ni Sierra. All of us waved at him goodbye as he climbed inside the taxi. Nginitian ulit ako ni Gideon bago niya isinarado ang pintuan. Mayamaya pa ay umandar na ang taxi at mabilis na humarurot paalis sa aming bahay.

Inilagay ni Sierra ang kaniyang kamay sa aking balikat. "Don't worry, Mallory. Suki and I are going to take care of you throughout your entire pregnancy. I can't wait to see my inaanak!" she said and giggled. Napangiti na lamang ako sa kaniyang sinabi.

Kabado ako habang naghihintay sa labas ng bahay. I sat on the mat and stared at my bared feet. Leon is supposed to arrive any minute by now. I would have to face him and tell him I'm pregnant with someone's child.

Napatingin ako sa aking cellphone. I didn't bother to reply at Sage's wave. Seen. It was so damn stupid. He tried contacting me after that but I never answered. Kailangan ko munang makausap si Leon ngayon. If Sage and I are going to talk, it might be better if we do it personally.

"Nee-san!" Suki called out. Napatingin kaagad ako. A taxi pulled in front of our house. I swallowed hard and stared at Sage's wave one last time before I turned my phone off and got up. "Leon is here!" maligaya nitong balita sa akin.

I nodded at her and crossed the yard to greet Leon. Nakaramdam ako ng pagka-awa nang makita ko ang namumuong eyebags sa ilalim ng kaniyang mga mata. Mukhang hindi na siya nakakatulog nang maayos.

"Leon . . ."

"Hey," he took long strides towards my direction and engulfed me in a hug. He buried his face on the crook of my neck. "I've missed you so much." He whispered.

Hindi ako makasagot. Umandar na papalayo ang taxi. I clenched and unclenched my fists. Dinalaw na naman ng kaba ang aking puso.

"Leon, I cooked your favorite food!" wika ni Suki mula sa likuran. "C'mon, let's eat!"
