Heart Strings Chapter Twenty One

Start from the beginning

‘Nah,’ they lied.

‘I guess we can go in now?’ Sammie asked. Both me and Ian nodded.

When we’d all paid up, it was time to put those stupid boots on. I managed to subtly snag myself a place next to Sephy, mentally calling myself a creepy stalker as I did so.

‘Hey Nathan.’ Sephy said.

‘Hey, what’s up?’ I replied casually before I realised how much of an idiotic thing that was to say.

Sephy laughed, ‘tying laces, you?’

‘Same,’ I sighed inwardly. Loser.

‘Nathan!’

‘Yeah?’ I turned to Sephy alarmed.

‘You didn’t bring thick socks!’ I looked down at my feet and then at Sephy’s. She had thick, blue, fluffy socks on inside her skates which she’d just finished tying.

‘I’m supposed to?’

Sephy’s eyebrows rose, ‘have you never been ice skating before?’ I shook my head.

‘Oh you deprived boy!’ she exclaimed, pulling a face, mock appalled. ‘Normally you should have gloves too but I forgot. Your shins might get a bit sore now.’

I smiled, ‘I’m sure I’ll be okay.’

‘I hope so.’

When we were all ready we got on the ice together. From the second my first foot grazed the ice, I knew I had made a huge mistake, again.

For the first five minutes, I watched in confusion and wonder at the girls and Sam, flying across the ice in circles, seemingly without too much trouble, whilst the rest of the guys slid around, making their way by holding onto the side. I on the other hand, did the smartest thing and stayed where I was, even when I got some funny looks from parents trying to manoeuvre their kids round. True, I was in their way, but if I moved, I would fall. It was a safety matter.

Of course as everyone went past, they laughed and pointed at me, especially Tony and Ian, but I got the last laugh when Sammie took Ian round with her and he fell over. It served him right.

Pretty soon, obviously, my eyes started following Sephy around the rink. Fortunately most of the time I didn’t see her going around with David. Sephy had skated around at least once with everybody and twice with some others, like Tabby, Sammie, Mel, Adam, Sam and David before she approached me.

As she stopped beside me, she gave me a disappointed look.

‘No.’ I said simply.

‘Come on,’ she pleaded, ‘what’s the point of coming if you don’t do anything?

‘Hmm,’ I pretended to think, ‘wow, well I guess there wasn’t one.’ Sephy placed her hands on her hips. ‘I’m just not one for ice, okay?’

Just then Love Song by Sara Bareilles came on. Sephy grinned widely, ‘perfect. Come on, skating as you sing and dance is the best experience!’ I shook my head. ‘I’ll hold your hand!’

I shook my head again, ‘Ian failed when Sammie was holding his hand, to my amusement.’

‘Ugh!’ Sephy huffed, stamping a booted foot on the cold ice, chipping it slightly, ‘you can’t laugh at people if you’re not even doing it yourself!’
