We cannot really love anybody with whom we never laugh

Agnes Repplier

Once the bell rang, marking the beginning of lunch, I made my way to the old dance studio, otherwise known as the detention room.

Having a detention was not really that much of a punishment in school, to be honest. Even though we weren't allowed to talk, the teacher who was on duty usually couldn't deal with everyone, and if they could..? Tough luck.

We had to sit on the ground though, which was not comfortable, so that was a kind punishment I guessed, but the rest of it, not really. It was basically a place to relax without having tiny little year sevens interrupting you and wanna-be year nines sitting in your place. It was actually a pretty cool pace to be if your friends were in detention with you.

Apparently, some people actually tried to get detentions so they could have some peace and be away from the rest of the school. Which was just slightly sad...but clever.

I took my place in a corner of the room that wasn't quite as dirty as the rest of it. The small room was already quite loud and everyone was eating their lunches whilst the teacher in charge looked on hopelessly. I dumped my bag beside me and took out my ham sandwich. It was limp and didn't look very appetising at all. I took a bite. Oop. It was warm too. Great. A limp, warm, ham sandwich. What could be worse? Some people didn't mind warm ham, sure, but I did. It was disgusting. I mean, it was like a ham in a hot tub.

It shouldn't happen.

After taking another bite (and almost throwing up) I found myself wondering if Nathan was even going to turn up when the door opened and in he stalked.

Of course he strolled all the way to me without even looking at anyone else. I almost choked on my sandwich when he plonked himself beside me and grinned like a naughty boy, which, indeed, he was.

'What's up?' he wanted to know.

'Nothing.'

'Cool,' he nodded, turning away only to turn back seconds later. 'What's in that?' I glared at my sandwich.

'Ham. Warm ham.'

'Ooh,' Nathan winced. 'There is nothing worse than warm ham, right?'

'Nope,' I laughed, glancing at him. He looked strangely happy. Blissful, if I was being honest. Like a little boy who'd just been given...a train set that he really, really, really wanted. I sighed as I thought back to the morning register. 'So, you going to tell me now?'

'Tell you what?' He asked, blue eyes turning to me.

'Why you are happy or something.' I told him, finally finishing the dreaded warm ham sandwich. 'Mr. El Diablo.'

Nathan looked at me like I was mad before continuing, 'Oh, because we are going to talk after school today, right? About the music.'

'Oh,' I breathed, feeling rather winded. 'I wasn’t exactly aware, but okay. Yeah. That should be interesting. Hey, want any?' I offered him some Pringles as I took them out of my bag.

'Thanks, Sephy!' he flashed me another grin whilst grabbing some. 'It's unreal how hungry I am actually. I would offer you something, but I don't have anything with me...'

'No problem, Nathan.' I assured him and grinned. ‘You know, you really should eat something. Eating disorders are not cool. Zero isn’t the new... Whatever.’
