Friends are the pillars on your porch. Sometimes they hold you up, sometimes they lean on you and sometimes it's just enough to know that they are standing by.

'I'm fine, seriously. If I had worn shin pads I would have been okay!' I told Adam after lunch, who was still fussing over me because of my little collision with some girl's hockey stick during P.E.

'I know, but... Are you sure it's not broken or something?' I bent my leg slowly, refraining from wincing.

'I can bend it. It should be okay. Just a bruise. Besides the nurse said it was good,' I smiled at him.

'You can never trust her, she said I'd be fine when I had a headache before but I turned out to have Scarlet bloomin' Fever. But, well, if you say so. Will you be able to walk to English okay? Or do you want to lean on me?'

'I'll be fine.' Adam grinned at me but kept his arm hovering protectively by my waist.

I limped slightly down the overcrowded corridor as Adam walked slowly beside me. It was sweet of him to make sure that I was okay. If I recalled, no one else did. Even Mel laughed when I screamed, and then at lunch when I'd told the other girls, they started gossiping about the girl who’d hit me, Stacey, and how she'd been sleeping with two different guys, not including her boyfriend. And yes, I joined in, but I couldn't help myself with gossip...

Then again, they were kind of sympathetic afterward... But still. Not the reaction you expect from your best friends. It’s friends before gossip, always.

Well, that's why I love my Adam.

When we finally arrived in English, late, thanks to my bruised shin, Mr. Watson decided to bestow onto us one of his sarcastic words.

'So glad you could finally join us,' he smiled humourlessly.

‘So am I,’ I nodded at him with a sweet smile of my own as I made my way to the seat beside Nathan and Adam settled beside me.

I glanced at Nathan wondering if he'd heard my scream during P.E as his group was only up the field. He had his head down, writing the date in his broken book.

Mr. Watson bumped his way through people's desks earning glares as people’s books slid off, until he reached me and Adam, not to tell us off anymore but to announce what our next assignment would be.

'Right, Persephone, Adam, I would like everyone to write a sonnet from Jane Eyre to Mr. Rochester, or Adam, if you'd prefer, you can do it vice versa. It must be in next Monday, I will have no excuses from anyone who hasn't done it. This is the only lesson you will have to begin the assignment so you may want to use this time wisely and begin your planning and possibly start on the proper thing. Yes?'

We both nodded and watched as he bumped away before looking at each other and grinning. Adam began scribbling straight away and counting syllables on his fingers but I was completely stuck for ideas.

I turned to Nathan who was still writing and mouthing what he'd done. I smiled.

It was cute, but there was something wrong. I furrowed my eyebrows. Nathan seemed a bit, different. He wasn't speaking. That wasn't normal, surely.

I opened my mouth to say something but thought better of it and looked back at my empty page. I took out a biro and wrote the date. The page wasn't so empty anymore.
