Problems are to the mind what exercise is to the muscles, they toughen and make strong
Norman Vincent Peale
Walking in to the maths room, I was able to spot Ian straight away. He was near the back talking to some guy that I’d seen around but didn’t know, and another one who had been with him and Nathan in the morning. That, I guessed, would be David. Now I had seen them, I could recall seeing them in the classroom before. Both of them were pretty quiet in lessons and only answered questions when called. David almost always got them right. The silly clever clogs.
Me and Adam took our seats slightly ahead of them.
‘He isn’t that bad looking you know,’ Adam said out of the blue.
‘Who?’ I asked him, distracted.
‘Nathan,’ he smiled happily, practically clapping his hands. I rolled my eyes.
‘Please stop! Why must you all torment me...? Anyway, I need to focus,’ I insisted, turning my head to the front of the room. He threw me a Special Adam Oh-My-Gawd look.
‘In maths? You are not serious...’
‘Well, I’ll be grilled like a panda in a pancake pan if I fail.’
‘Hey, that’s a new one!’ Adam laughed. ‘And that may be true, but there is no chance of that happening because you are totally amazing at the subject at hand.’ I smiled at him and looked ahead, choosing not to reply.
The maths lesson rolled on and so a Tic Tac Toe game was born. After only three games, Adam seemed to be getting bored and a bit frustrated.
‘You okay Adam?’ I asked him scrunching up another piece of paper after winning all three games, which was unusual. He sighed.
‘Yeah, just, you know, tired.’ I peered at him sceptically. His beautiful green eyes weren’t showing he was tired, they were showing he was worried or upset about something. And I hated to see Adam upset.
‘Come on Adam, tell me what’s wrong,’ I urged. He looked at me troubled for a few seconds before looking back down.
‘I’m... I don’t know. Things are… It’s just home, you know.’
‘What’s happening?’
‘Dad...he’s just, things are getting worse Sephy. And I know it’s because of me. What I am. I don’t know what to do any more. And mum is practically a ghost around the house now...’ his eyes shone with unshed tears, Adam tears. They seemed to magnify the pain in his eyes. He brushed them away with slender fingers, and I wanted to hug him so badly, but had to settle with holding his hand.
‘Don’t worry Adam, it’ll be okay, we’ll figure something out-’
‘You don’t get it Sephy, we can’t figure something out because Dad hates what I am and what I am is gay, there is nothing we can do about that...’ He sighed and lowered his head. ‘Look, I...I’m sorry for putting this all on you...’
‘Don’t be sorry! And don’t give up yet Adam,’ I said softly. An idea popped into my head. ‘What if, what if you aren’t gay...?’
He looked up at me as if I had lost it, ‘yeah, but I am...’
‘Think about it, what if you aren’t... Just get yourself a girlfriend, bring her home, date her for a week or two... and there you go. As long as your dad sees you two together, all is well.’
