I stayed on the bench. Alone.
I’m staying here until you go.
Oh. My. Fucking. Days. And I thought I was being the prince in shiny armour, when really I was being the up-himself-frog-who-thought-he-knew-everything-when-really-he-didn’t-who-was-cold-tired-and-rejected.
Happy now Nathan?
Yes, conscience, I am. That felt good.
And for anyone who didn’t understand, that was sarcasm.
Just then the clouds opened up and down poured the rain. My status changed. I was the up-himself-frog-who-thought-he-knew-everything-when-really-he-didn’t-who-was-cold-tired-rejected-and-wet.
I may as well have given up. By the looks of things, that wouldn’t have been so hard. Ten more minutes and I’d have died of pneumonia.
As I got up to go, I got a call. Jewel.
‘Hello?’
‘Hey, it’s Jewel...’
‘Yeah. Got that.’
‘So... Anymore info?’
‘Do you know what time it is?’
‘Time?’ There was a pause. ‘Nathan, are you getting old? It’s only eight! God.’
I sat back down, not caring about the drenched seat. I was probably more soaked than it was.
‘Okay.’ I sighed. She laughed.
‘Now, any more on that girl of yours?’
‘I’ve destroyed everything. Basically anyway.’ I groaned before reciting the whole story, starting from the P.E lesson.
‘Oh. Well. Give up.’ Jewel said.
‘What?’ Girls were totally surprising me recently. First Sephy with...everything. Then Gina and how she didn’t completely run away from me as far as she could when I barely paid any attention to her in our whole date even though I called her. And now Jewel was telling me to give up?
‘You are a bit of a freak, aren’t you? You don’t talk about things like that with her. You’ve probably made her feel even guiltier than she already was about everything.’
‘Wha-?’
‘You should have just kissed her instead of trying to be some kind of psychologist!’ Hmm... Exactly what Gina said... ‘Seriously Nathan... If I wasn’t here, I’d be there helping you sort out your incredible stupidity with all things feminine.’ I sighed. ‘And, by the way, why were you with some chick while you still like Sephy?’
‘To get my mind off Sephy.’
‘Never works. You guys just don’t understand do you? We’ll peg you eventually.’
‘Okay then Jewel... I’m going to go...’
‘No! I haven’t told you my news yet!’ I grinned.
‘I thought there was a reason you called...’
‘Haha, you know me so well! Anyway, this guy that I’ve been trying to get for ages has finally asked me out!’
‘Woo!’ I cooed, attempting at a girl’s voice. An old woman passing by sent me a disapproving look.
‘It’s amazing! His name is Ethan! A bit like yours. I think it’s a sign that he’s the one. Don’t you?’
‘Hey, hey, Jewel! The one? Are you sure about that?’
‘Of course! He’s gorgeous! He has black hair, like you again! Except his is so much, nicer... Really soft, you know? No offense.’
‘None taken.’
‘And, God, he is fine! He works out too! He’s tall, beautiful... Oh... I can’t wait to actually go out with him properly! You know, just the two of us... You have to come back over soon and meet him!’
‘My, he sounds delicious honey!’ I gushed. This time I swear, the way a guy at the bus stop looked at me... I felt over exposed... I sat up awkwardly and looked away feeling just a bit sick. Jewel laughed.
‘Yeah... He is... Wish me luck Nathaniel!’
‘Yeah, luck Juliette.’
‘Thanks. And, even though I suggest you give up before something real bad happens, good luck with your Persephone, yeah?’ I suddenly felt all too sober.
‘Yeah, thanks.’ I pushed my phone into my back pocket and started walking home. I couldn’t be arsed to wait for a bus.
