‘What?’ I looked at Gina shocked.

‘Kiss her. It’s not that hard.’ I cocked my head to the side. ‘I can’t just kiss her. She’s still with her boyfriend-’

‘And this guy too apparently.’

‘It’s not that easy...’ I shook my head. Gina grinned.

‘You don’t look like the kind of guy who is afraid to kiss a girl...’ My cheeks flushed. What impression was I giving everybody? ‘I’ve heard somewhere that a kiss is like singing into someone’s mouth,’ Gina said casually, ‘and you’re pretty good at the singing thing, so...’ I felt myself blush deeper. Fuck my cheeks.

‘Thanks Gina, but I’m going to have to pass on that one.’

‘Whatever floats your boat.’ Gina ate the last of her chips and sighed. I’d finished too. ‘So, is that it then?’ I shrugged. ‘I guess. I’ll call you?’ Gina laughed as she stood up.

‘You better!’ I smiled and put the bill on the table and we stood to go.

Outside it was dark and the wind was cold and crisp. ‘Are you walking home in this?’ I asked.

‘Yup. I only live ten minutes away.’

‘Lucky. I live about half an hour away. I’ll be catching a bus.’ She laughed.

We were silent for a moment before Gina said, ‘do I get a hug before I go?’ She was looking at me from under her eyelashes.

‘Of course,’ I said, lowering to her level and pulling her into a hug. She grinned as we pulled away.

‘And a little peck? For my efforts?’ I smiled at her.

‘Really Gina?’

‘A kiss is all it takes,’ she said, pouting persuasively. I ducked my head and kissed her quickly on the lips.

‘Bye Nathan,’ she said tip-toeing up to me. ‘And good luck.’

‘Thanks,’ I said with a nod and a wave.

Just as Gina walked away I noticed a girl in a red top sitting on a bench by the bus stop; Sephy.

‘Sephy?’ I asked quietly as I sat on the bench.

She turned to me before looking down at her fingers. They were twirling round and round a piece of black thread that, I guessed, she had pulled off her skirt.

‘Hi.’

There was silence. ‘Why did you lie?’ I asked eventually. I didn’t look at her.

Sephy turned to me. Her face was showing signs of anger, so why did I carry on? ‘I mean, you said Adam was gay but he kissed you. I’m not stupid. You could have just told me you two had something going on.’ I paused, ‘It’s not like I care any-’

Sephy’s face contorted into disbelief as she moved over on the bench, making space between us. ‘What the hell? Nathan just don’t talk if you don’t know what is going on! Don’t fucking put this on Adam!’

She was sobbing already, her hands placed over her face. All I could see were the huge rolls of tears easing down her face.

Happy now? I asked myself.

I’m such a shit face sometimes.

Eventually Sephy’s hands fell from her face and onto her lap. Her eyes were rimmed with mascara which was also cascading down her cheek. Black tears fell from her chin and onto her hands, She didn’t seem to care. She was looking at the bus that had just stopped but didn’t move to catch it.
