Heart Strings Chapter Seventeen

Start from the beginning

‘Really?’ Adam asked, uninterested.

‘Yes, I-’

‘I actually need the toilet...’ I said hurriedly.

‘Oh?’ Mr. Woods said before looking at Adam. ‘Women, eh? We men have to get used to their frequent toilet breaks!’ Adam half smiled. As I got up I kissed him quickly on the cheek and turned to go towards the toilet. As I did so, only four tables away I saw Nathan looking at me.

For a moment I was still from the shock but I was shaken out of it when I saw “Gina” the waitress from Maggie’s with him. I made my way to the toilets, boiling with anger, strangely enough…

In the toilets I freshened my make-up and stared at myself for a long time in the mirror. My mind was so blank yet mixed up. I could barely think. Why was Nathan here? With that slutty bitch too! And how was I going to manage not stabbing Adam’s dad before the end of the night?!

I opened the door to find Nathan standing right in front of me. My head cocked to the side.

‘Sephy? What are you doing here?’

‘What? What are you doing here?’

‘I’m, it’s nothing. Why are you here with Adam?’ His blue eyes looked darker and were partly hidden by his black hair.

‘Excuse me Nathan, what are you doing with Gina Crazy eyes Snake girl?’

He raised his eyebrows. ‘You were talking about snake girls back at Maggie’s!

‘What is this anyway? What does it matter to you?’

‘You told me he was gay!’ I put two fingers to his lips but withdrew them quickly when I caught a glimpse of Adam and Mr. Woods looking at us from our table.

‘Nathan, what does it matter that I lied anyway? I have to go; I haven’t got time for this.’

‘You kissed him, but he’s gay, how does that make sense?’

‘What?’ I asked, ‘It wasn’t even on the lips!’

‘It... Wasn’t?’ I frowned. Nathan looked confused suddenly. ‘Why are you on a date with him?’

I sighed. ‘If you must know, it’s to prove to his dad that he isn’t gay even though he is, now I seriously have to go-’

Nathan blushed, ‘sorry.’ I shook my head and laughed as I made my way back to my table. ‘Yeah, okay.’ When I sat back at the table Mr. Woods smiled at me tightly whilst Adam looked strained.

‘Dad, don’t-’

‘Is this some kind of joke to you?’

‘No! Why would it be?’ I objected.

‘This is all a lie, isn’t it?!’ he accused.

‘No dad, it’s not.

‘How am I meant to fucking believe that? That’s her boyfriend isn’t it? You just got some friend to act like your girlfriend to fool me... Well it isn’t working!’

‘That’s not my boyfriend Mr. Woods, that is Nathan a friend of mine-’

‘And I’m meant to believe that because-’

‘He’s with someone,’ I stated, that fact annoying me to no end. Mr. Woods’ eyes lifted above mine, apparently looking at Nathan’s table.

He looked back at me coldly. ‘I will not be made a fool.’

‘What have I got to do to prove it to you Mr. Woods?’ I asked helplessly. Adam put his arm around me.

Nothing. My boy is a fucking fag. Let’s leave it at that.’ My eyes widened as Adam looked down.

‘You bastard.’ I whispered, before turning to Adam fiercely, considering begging him if we could leave. He looked up at me and took my face in his hands.

‘Sorry Sephy,’ he uttered under his breath before pulling me into his lips.

I hadn’t kissed too many people in my life, but Adam definitely had the most gentle and the softest lips. The way they moved with mine, felt against mine, seemed right.

Which wasn’t. Right I mean.

But I forgot to think. I threw my hands around his neck and pulled in as he did. I didn’t think about the fact that his father was there, or that this was just for his dad to see, or even that Adam was gay, all I thought about was Adam. His hands on my cheek. His hands on my waist. His lips on my lips. I ran my hands through his hair and held on.

Stop it. Stop.’ Mr. Woods spat.

Slowly me and Adam pulled away, but we took no notice of Adam’s dad. We were staring at each other, surprised. ‘It’s all fake.’ Mr. Woods repeated, getting up angrily, before storming off.

‘I’m sorry.’ Adam said again.

‘You had to.’ He nodded. I left my hand to fall slowly down his face and onto his lap.

‘I’m sorry.’ He repeated. I smiled shakily.

‘You had to.’

‘But it’s true.’ For a moment, I didn’t know what Adam meant. And then my heart drowned in realisation. ‘I’m sorry.’

I said nothing this time. I was sorry too.
