Heart Strings Chapter Seventeen

I dialled his number immediately, standing up. As the dialling tone sounded I picked at my over-sized jumper. Adam answered on the third ring.

‘Sephy?’

‘Adam!’

‘Are you okay? What happened? I’ve been calling! I was just about to go to your house…’

‘Oh, sorry, Nick was here when I got home.’

‘Seriously? Did he do anything? Are you okay?’

‘Nothing, nothing, just, wanted to talk. He thinks what he did was partly my fault because he thought I was cheating on him and got pissed off.’ I tugged at my jumper again, feeling my throat thicken and tears sting my eyes. Hearing footsteps I lowered my voice.

‘I’m fine though. I fell asleep.’

‘Oh… I, this isn’t a good time then…’

‘What?’

Adam sighed. ‘I told dad about the not gay thing… He was really enthusiastic…’

‘Oh!’ I grinned. ‘That’s great. Told you he’d believe it.’

‘He wants to celebrate now though.’

‘So we’ll sort something out.’

‘No, as in, now.’

‘Are you serious?’

‘Yup. I think he knows I’m still gay and if he leaves it any longer I’ll rustle something up. He wants to take us out for a meal.’ I wiped away my salty tears and nodded forgetting I was on the phone.

‘On my way.’

‘Are you sure? With the Nick thing and everything going on right now…’

‘I said I’d be with you through this Adam, and I will.’

‘Okay… I’m just, I feel so bad. He told mum and I’m definite that she doesn’t believe me. She looked at me as if I was letting her down because all along she’d been on my side with the whole thing…’

‘So tell her! Not now but later, just make sure she doesn’t tell your dad. Have you told Tabby?’

‘No, not yet, but I need to, don’t I? ’ Adam groaned, frustrated.

‘It’s okay, it’s okay, and I’ll be there as soon as I can.’

An hour later and I was at Adam’s house. Seeing as we were apparently being taken to a restaurant, I’d worn a black pencil skirt and a low cut red top as well as wearing mascara and a touch of lip gloss, but I never left the house without that.

Adam opened the door after the first knock and welcomed me in with a hug and a kiss on the cheek.

Mr. Woods was standing a little behind him, an ecstatic smile on his face.

‘Persephone!’ he said making his way to me and sticking out his hand. I accepted. Adam sent me an apologetic glance. ‘Welcome, you haven’t been around in a while.’   I grinned but inside I felt like slapping him on behalf of both Tabby and Adam. As if I could.

In the hall we were all silent for a moment. Adam took my hand subtly but Mr. Woods caught the movement and grinned on happily. ‘Shall we go?’ he piped up.

Adam looked at me and I nodded with a bashful smile. ‘Of course Mr. Woods.’

As we stepped outside, I looked behind me. Tabby was standing at the top of the stairs, staring blankly at me and Adam.
