I closed my eyes which had finally become dry and breathed in. I didn’t want to get back with Nick. I knew that now. I didn’t love him.
He was too different.
‘We’re still okay, right?’ he whispered in my ear before brushing his lips against mine. I turned my head away and struggled.
‘I don’t know. I don’t think so... It will never be the same... You’ve changed.’
Nick used a finger to turn my head back towards him. His blue eyes gripped with mine, attempting to persuade me.
‘I can be what I was before. I’ll even visit Andrew in hospital and apologise.’
‘Nick, isn’t something happening in court anyway? What you did… I can’t deal with that.’
For a moment his face clouded over in anger but when he spoke his voice was gentle. ‘Aren’t you meant to love me through everything? I need you with me now more than ever Sephy.’ My heart shook as my eyes stung.
What was I doing? Nick was right. Nick was lost. He needed me. At that moment I was the only one that could help him; it was his friends who were pushing him to be who he was in the first place. I could change Nick. We could work if I tried hard enough.
I put the phone down on the surface beside me and attempted to smile.
‘Okay,’ I said, the realisation of what I was saying, what I was doing, drilling into me hard. Had I just accepted him back into my life? ‘We’ll give it another try.’
Nick grinned as he ducked down to kiss me. It was only a shadow of his old self, but already it was coming back. Even though it would take a while, we could work.
The second the door shut I collapsed on the floor, my knees having given way, and sobbed brokenly.
We could work.
‘Sephy? Sephy!’
I felt myself being shaken and lifted up.
I opened my eyes slowly, seeing my mum and dad in front of, both holding me up.
‘Sephy? What are you doing sleeping on the kitchen floor?’ Mum asked worry etched into her forehead.
‘Um,’ I yawned, ‘I fell asleep I guess.’ Then I remembered exactly what I was doing on the floor. Slightly panicked, I looked at my parents, wondering if they’d seen today’s paper.
My parents didn’t know Nick was my boyfriend. We didn’t have that kind relationship, it wasn’t that we weren’t close, we just didn’t talk about certain things. My parents just trusted me to know how to take care of myself. And that was fine by me. Either way, they still knew who Nick was, that he was a friend of mine. I wasn’t sure if they knew his surname, but they could have heard it in passing.
I sat up properly.
They withdrew their hands as dad said, ‘do you have any idea why the cupboard is broken by any chance?’
‘Oh, my fault.’ I said apologetically.
‘That’s fine, I’ll sort it out. Your phone has been ringing for a while by the way.’
‘Thanks,’ I yawned again, plunging my hand into my shirt pocket and taking my phone out.
‘You’re an odd girl Sephy,’ mum grinned as she stood up. ‘I thought you were dead. People don’t fall asleep on kitchen floors you know.’
‘I’ll keep that in mind.’ I nodded.
‘Good,’ she said turning around. ‘You have dribble on your chin.’ I wiped my chin quickly as I checked my phone. There were five missed calls and four texts from Adam. All of them saying something along the lines of ‘are you okay? Call me!’
