‘Why don’t you ever call me anymore Sephy?’ he asked quietly, for a moment I saw a glimmer of the old Nick under this new one’s “bad-boy” facade.
I shook my head, my throat suddenly feeling sore. ‘I do.’
‘I’m your boyfriend Sephy. I can protect you; I love you. I just need one thing in return,’ Nick’s voice was slowly getting louder.
I placed my hand on his chest in an attempt to keep his anger from reaching me, hurting me. I was terrified. ‘Please Nick, I’m sorry. I don’t feel safe around you. Not anymore.’
Nick’s eyes widened. ‘You saw the paper?’ I nodded. Shoulders that were slouched tensed up.
‘How could you do that? Did you know it was Andrew when you attacked him?’
‘Do you know why I did that Sephy?’
‘Stop changing the subject Nick!’ I shouted angrily. I was shivering all over now, tears gushing out of my eyes and my hands balled into fists.
Nick grabbed my arms and shook me slightly. ‘Stop it!’ he hissed, but I continued to sob.
‘Why did you change?’ I cried, I was scared. I wanted to love Nick again. To love the Nick that he was two months ago. Two months ago everything was perfect.
‘I was angry Sephy, you’d made me angry!’ Nick spat as he pulled my face closer to his.
‘Don’t push this onto me! You practically killed someone!’ I shouted back.
‘Shut the fuck up! Do you want me to go to jail?’ Nick whispered urgently.
‘If that’s where you deserve to be,’ I cried.
Once again Nick shook me, fury apparent on his features. ‘You ran away from me in the fucking park with all my mates looking, what the fuck am I meant to do? It’s either kill Nathan or Andrew, Sephy, but I beginning to think I went for the wrong one.’
I froze, looking into Nick’s eyes. ‘What?’
Nick seemed to realise his mistake. He let go of me and turned around, kicking a cupboard hard. With a loud splintering sound the cupboard gave way and clattered to the ground.
Neither of us moved. Nick had put his hands in front of his face, swearing under his breath.
‘Forget it.’
‘No Nick. Were you planning on killing Andrew and Nathan?’
‘No,’ he growled. ‘It’s your fucking fault.’
‘People do stupid things when they’re angry Nick, but people don’t get themselves in this much shit. Don’t you dare blame this on me. You come to some park when I’m hanging out with a friend and accuse me of cheating on you. What the hell am I supposed to do? I’m not cheating on you. When you get that in your fucking head, maybe you can talk to me again; now get out of my house,’ I whispered. I had had enough.
‘What the fuck Sephy?’ Nick exploded.
I didn’t flinch, only took my phone out of my shirt pocket. Nick widened his eyes. We were silent. ‘I mean it Nick.’
Nick took my free hand pulling me towards him gently. ‘I’m sorry.’
I looked up at him. We were too close; I shivered, feeling his hand touch my cheek. ‘I trust you. I’m sorry for making you suffer,’ Nick continued, bowing his head lower so his lips were practically touching mine.
