'You got any inspiring ideas?' Adam whispered.
'Nope, nothing, you?'
'Not a thing. Well, barely a thing...' He smirked. I smiled as I peered at his page.
From Jane Eyre to Mr. Rochester:
Oh, you are just so tall, dark and handsome...
'Oh you are just so tall, dark and handsome!' I giggled, patting Adam's arm. He raised an eyebrow and laughed before continuing to write.
I looked at Nathan again to see that he was looking at me too. I smiled at him and was shocked when he smiled slightly and looked down again without looking into my eyes.
This was not Nathan.
Adam got up smoothly after whispering to me that he was going to the toilet. Once out of the room, I turned and studied Nathan. Eventually he looked up.
'What?'
'Have I done something wrong?' I asked. Nathan stopped writing.
'No. Why?'
'I just...' I paused, wondering if I'd really been imagining it. 'You seem to be acting really weird.’ He was silent for a moment, frowning slightly.
I mentally punched myself for saying such a stupid thing. The world did not revolve around me… So why did I feel so disappointed that Nathan was preoccupied with something that didn’t have anything to do with me?
'Well, umm, I'm sorry that I am?' Nathan replied.
'That's not what I meant!' I said quickly.
'Well what did you mean?' he asked, suddenly uncomfortably curious.
'I,' I paused for a moment. 'I don't know.' Nathan laughed softly, finally. I joined in, feeling like a bit of an idiot, but then again, Nathan was back to normal, so it was okay.
‘Had a good game of hockey then I see?’ he smiled eyeing my leg.
I nodded, ‘yup.’
‘Does it still hurt?’
‘Kind of. Just stings a bit. I’ll be okay.’ I laughed. Nathan nodded.
'So you're pretty close to Adam then?' he asked out of the blue, sobering me up.
'Umm, yeah. We are, he's a great friend.' I nodded.
'Do you see him a lot after school?' he asked. I cocked my head to the side and replied, 'yeah, I guess I do.'
'Has he got a girlfriend?' The question rushed so quickly out of Nathan's mouth, I wasn't sure he'd said it.
'Come again?' Nathan rolled his eyes and repeated the question slowly, cheeks flushing slightly. I tried to keep my lips together, trying to stop myself from bursting out laughing at what he'd just said. Was Nathan into Adam? I’d never heard of him being gay before, but, you never know in this generation, do you?
'You mean boyfriend right?' Nathan's expression was like that of a lost puppy. 'Adam is gay, Nathan,' I laughed, finally putting the poor boy out of his misery. Nathan's face went incredibly red, making me feel just a bit guilty. I couldn't believe he couldn't guess, but then again, looking at Adam, he wasn't all that obvious other than the fact that he was so incredibly perky and…gay-like…
Eh. It could just be the fact that I knew he was gay...
At that moment, Adam walked in. I stopped laughing, remembering how Adam was getting pretty depressed about the whole thing and quickly whispered to Nathan, 'but don't say anything to him, okay?' Out of the corner of my eye Nathan seemed to be looking at me strangely but I'd turned my attention Adam.
