'Nothing...just friends.' I replied breathless.
'You...realise...no...one....believes...that...right?'
'Well, take it....from me...Someone who... Actually knows.'
'Okay...just...saying...you...know... You...two could...actually be...really...cute...together...'
'Well it's...not going to...happen...' I replied feeling slightly miserable because I knew she didn't like me in that way.
'Says...the mighty...heartbreaker.' David smirked.
I stuck my foot out and watched him trip, land with a heavy thud and scrape his face across the grass as he did so. He sent me an annoyed glare as he stood up, rubbing his green-tinged cheek. I laughed at him though inside I was annoyed myself. Why was he saying that? I hadn't done anything like that for ages... Was I always going to be known as the Mighty Heartbreak Guy, cool as that sounded? Did Sephy still think I was one?
I still had a chance right?
'Adam!' Sephy's voice came from a distance. I turned my head to see what was going on. Adam was lifting Sephy up, hockey stick in hand as she squealed.
I felt a pang of jealousy in my stomach and immediately picked up speed, David trailing slowly behind.
It made no sense. She was with Nick... Right?
By the time I'd finished fifteen laps I could hardly breathe. Everyone was inching into the basketball courts. I was lagging behind.
Mr. Lindsay started throwing orders out. 'Come on King! Get a move one, you're up!'
'I'm coming,' I muttered. He should try running fifteen laps.
If he could even do one that was.
David turned out to be on my team, with Tony on the opposite side.
‘Ha-ha, you're going down King!' Tony teased as the Mr. Lindsay began making his way to the middle of the court.
'Unless we take you down first!' I challenged, squeezing on a cheap red bib.
Tony raised an eyebrow as he looked at David who was standing, arms crossed, looking towards the hockey players down the field closer to the school building. Following his line of view, he seemed to be looking at Sephy, Mel and Adam passing hockey balls to each other. For a moment I considered David liking Sephy too but I pushed the thought away.
Impossible.
He seemed to be above every girl in our year and only seemed to fancy girls who didn’t even attend our school.
One of our team, a guy called Kyle, clicked his fingers in front of David's face. David scowled at him and everyone burst out laughing just as the ball was thrown up.
Two guys, Joe and Harry -both incredibly tall monsters with the kind of build most guys would die for-, jumped up. Harry, who was on the opposite team, caught it and so the game began.
I was slow to start. Again my attention was taken by laughter coming from Sephy's side of the field. It wasn't her but she was now running expertly with her hockey stick, twisting quickly through other players.
'Hello? King? Dude,' Joe pushed my shoulder and waved his hand in front of my face. 'Come on.' I pushed it away.
'Okay, okay. Let's get this over with.'
As soon as Joe got hold of and bounced the ball to me, I passed it to Kyle who weaved his way through some of the opposite team. Tony managed to knock it out of his hand and dribbled towards me. As I reached for the ball Tony threw it to a guy named Jesse. Surprisingly, David intercepted. Apparently proud of his achievement, David froze for a bit, staring at the ball with a small smile on his face. The ball was stolen away by Harry who eventually managed to slam the ball into the net.
'Swish,' he smirked as he dropped from the rim.
I turned away wiping sweat from my brow. Tony high-fived him and grinned at me whilst David slouched by the side depressed.
'Would you prefer press-ups, Mr. Mouthy?' Mr. Lindsay shouted from a distance waking David from his bed of self-pity. 'I didn't think so. Get into the game!'
David ran to the other side of the court and started jogging on the spot, terrified.
It was hilarious to see such a level-headed guy in the presence of the teacher he hated more than death.
At the end of the game it was 23 – 19 to the blues.
'Ha, how do you like that King?' Tony shouted.
I raised my eyebrows, a small smile on my face. 'It's just a game, Miller. Calm down,' I called back.
Basketball always got Tony worked up even though he claimed to hate it.
Personally, it annoyed me just a bit, I didn't even know why, but I'd always preferred football.
'Okay, people!' Mr. Lindsay yelled, rounding everybody up. We trouped together.
'Good games! Excellent! As usually, Tim, Joe and Harry were the stars of the show!! And on the girl's team, Leonie! You're a treasure. You should consider joining the girls’ basketball team, you know. The rest of you need to, pump it up a bit, shall I say? Not mentioning any names in particular,' he murmured looking at David.
I chuckled under my breath.
'Now, let's get in.' We all turned to go. 'Oi, oi, Mr. Mouthy, I don't know where you're going. Forgot ya balls did you?'
David turned bright red and seemed to sink as he looked at his shorts momentarily in panic before realising and turning to the dozens of basketballs scattered across four courts.
'Right, in!' I smiled at David sympathetically as he began his mission, cursing fiercely under his breath.
Suddenly there was a scream from the other side of the field.
I looked up towards their pitch along with most others. Straight away I could see Sephy crouched on the grassy floor cradling her left leg.
Stupidly enough, I began running towards her.
Even when I heard Mr. Lindsay calling me back I didn't stop. No, I only slowed down when as I watched Adam kneel down beside her and pull her into a tight hug. He was whispering in her ear as she nodded, I stopped. It all seemed too intimate. Too-
'Nathan?' I felt Tony's hand on my shoulder.
'What?' I turned to him quickly. 'Need the toilet.'
I started to run again, not stopping as I past Sephy's group, not even peering to see what was happening. I continued until I reached the boy's toilets.
There I tried to block out the images. I should have known. They were close. They were always talking when we went to Maggie's too and they'd sat beside each other... I shook my head. Why did I care anyway?
Because I liked her.
Walking into the sports hall, most people from my group were looking at me as if I'd fallen off a cliff and lived.
'King, just to make sure you know, you have a detention tomorrow.' Mr. Lindsay yelled even though I was only a few centimetres away from him. 'You don't run off and ignore my orders!'
I kept my head down. Like I would go anyway. Was it worth it? Was Sephy worth it? Why did I bother? I still didn't understand why I ran...
I shook my head and decided I had to somehow get her out of my mind... If I could. If.
