Heart Strings Chapter Twelve

Start from the beginning

'But it's different. You love closing your eyes when you swing because it makes you feel like you are flying and gives you the security of flying without the insecurity of planes.' Sephy stared at me wide-eyed for a moment.

'Huh. Okay then Mr. Smarty Pants. You tell me a secret.'

'Me?'

'Yes, Nathan, a.k.a., Mr. Smarty Pants, you.'

'Hmm,' I let my mind run wild. 'I enjoy long baths on Sundays.' Sephy giggled and pushed my arm playfully as she began to swing again.

'Who doesn't? Another one.'

'Okay... I hate ice cream.'

'No!'

'Yup. I prefer lollies.'

'There's no difference!' Sephy disagreed.

I shook my head, 'there so is! Ice cream is really dull. And too creamy. Lollies have more flavour!'

She squinted, 'really now?'

'Yup. It's a well known fact.'

'No!'

'Hey, take it from Mr. Smarty Pants,' I laughed, rocking myself slightly.

'Huh. I think I regret giving you that name now.' I smiled.

'You can take it back if you like.'

'Hmm... Nah,' she swung higher and higher. I shrugged.

'Your decision.' Sephy nodded. We were both silent. I couldn't help thinking that I hadn't felt this relaxed in a long time.

'Hey, do you know something?'

'What?'

'The sun is shining, and it's November.'

I laughed, 'yeah. Amazing, right?' She nodded before closing her eyes and swinging, and I couldn't help thinking how amazing she looked in it. In the rays of the sun.

Weird. Pervert.

'Nathan?'

'Yeah?'

'Let's see how high you can swing, shall we?'

I laughed, 'you're on!' And so we swung till we were tired.

'I totally won!' Sephy insisted as our swings slowed down.

'Really didn't,' I huffed. Who knew swinging was good exercise?

'Oh come on Nathan, it's not like you are the fittest frog in the fish tank-' she began. I glanced at her confused. She grinned.

'You're not the fittest person I know. You are barely breathing!'

'Actually Sephy, it's because I've just eaten all that food!' I said, patting my stomach.

'And I haven't?'

'Not as much as I have,' I grinned at her.

'Huh. Still.'

The conversation lolled into a companionable silence. I still felt like I was soaring even though, you know, I wasn’t. It sounded pretty camp, but Sephy was right about swinging. I had felt like I was flying. It felt like there was nothing in the world that could take me off that swing, there and then, especially when I closed my eyes. Then again, I glanced at Sephy subtly out of the corner of my eye; it could also have something to do with who I was swinging with.
