Heart Strings Chapter Four

Start from the beginning

My phone vibrated in my hand; “YUP. STLL MEET ME @ GATE. LUV U. X”

‘Right Sammie dahling, we are meeting Nick at the gate. Lets go-!’

‘Don’t be rude, Sephy. Nathan is talking to you. Sorry Nathan, my little Sephy forgets her manners sometimes. What were you saying?’ I eyed Sammie, annoyed, as Nathan laughed at the two of us.

‘Ah, it’s okay. You are meeting someone... It’s not those losers from English though is it?’ My jaw dropped dramatically.

No! I forgot! And now when I walk past them they’ll probably think that...oh God I can’t do this!’ Once again, Nathan laughed, but this time Sammie joined in. ‘Guys! This is serious!’

‘Maybe you shouldn’t have gotten yourself into this then!’ Nathan choked out, his cheeks pink. My jaw dropped again in utterly surprised devastation.

‘But you totally told me to!’ I threw at him.

‘And who says you have to listen to me??’ he asked, a slick grin on his face.

Grrr... I hate him all over again.

‘You guys are so hilarious!’’ Sammie grinned. I eyed her murderously but she only turned to Nathan. ‘Join us Nathan, do you catch a bus by any chance?’

‘I can, but I prefer to walk.’

‘Oh, we have a nature boy on our hands do we…’ I stated drily as Sammie hooked arms with Nathan and began walking out of the huge electronic sliding doors, leaving poor old me behind.

‘Stop being mean, Sephy. Now hurry.’ She ordered jokily. They strode ahead, almost lost in a sea of pupils.

My chest panged; oh dear... Was that jealousy I felt?

I ran up to them, moping loudly (because you know moping silently is no fun, no one can hear you), and walked along side Sammie.

The playground was torture to go through. As always. I could never understand why people just stood there when they could be going home or...somewhere else. Somewhere where they wouldn’t die of suffocation and loss of personal space. I found myself clinging onto Sammie’s hand and, surprisingly, wondering whether she was clinging onto Nathan’s.

Chh... Not that it would have mattered or anything. At all.

Finally crossing the red sea, that absolutely refused to part, we reached the gate. I found myself cowering behind Sammie, peeking over her shoulder for the dreaded Teddy Bear Crew. ‘Guys... Are they there?’

‘Yup. Their looking around...' Nathan commentated. 'Oh! Wait, they’ve seen us...Yeah...They’re...They’re coming over...’

‘Nooo......’ I moaned, twisting around and trying to make my way through the ocean of moving caterpillars. (As our Principal, Mr. Cole, calls us anyway. Apparently we shall one day turn into Butterflies and fly the coop or something. Gawd, what baloney.)

‘Come back here you coward!’ Sammie beckoned. I felt a sharp tug at my skirt and turned back to Sammie, hiding my face in her shoulder. She patted my head and soothed me gently.

‘Walk Sammie, walk past the gate and don’t let go of me.’ I begged. Once again I heard Nathan’s laughter. ‘You are nothing but a broken record Nathan.’ I fumed.

‘So will you fix me?’ I could just imagine the sleazy smirk on his face. Ah, blow him.

We kept moving, slowly, but surely.

‘Almost there...’ Sammie whispered in my ear, right before I tripped.

I opened my eyes. My knee was throbbing, my hands were grazed and I could tell I didn’t look very attractive. My skirt was hitched a bit too high for comfort, my knee highs were at my ankles and my hair was obviously a mess. Worst of all, Nathan, Nick and Sammie along with a load of people who clearly didn’t give a damn about personal space were crouched down, staring at me like I was a recently discovered Mummy.

‘Gar.’ I said. Just to please them.

‘There’s our Sephy!’ Sammie grinned and offered a hand which I gladly took. She pulled me up.

‘Sephy what happened?’ Nick asked, concern visible on his face.

‘Fell down.’ I told him. Nah.... Idiot.

Oop. Sorry.

‘Are you okay?’ Nathan asked after that.

I nodded, searching around me. ‘Yup... Are they still here?’

‘No, they left just before you fell, looking slightly pissed if you ask me.’ He grinned. Looking forward to your afternoon I’m sure.’ I looked on wide-eyed. 'Joking! Joking! I never saw them. Well, I thought I did, but it wasn't them, but I didn't say anything because you just looked so hilarious hiding behind Sammie and-'

‘Huh?’ Nick looked confused.

‘Oh nothing!!’ I grinned, sending Nathan an evil glare whilst giving Nick a big hug before straightening my uniform, socks and skirt. My knee had only the smallest of grazes on it. I brushed it, wincing slightly.

‘Hey, I’m going to take off now, Sammie, Sephy... and,’ he nodded, ‘you must be Nick.’ Nick nodded, a look of confusion still plastered to his face.

‘And you are...’

‘Nathan. Nathan King.’ Nathan smiled, shaking Nick’s hand.

‘Cool...’ Nick said hesitantly.

‘Right, I guess I’ll be going then...’ Nathan sighed, mock sadly, and turned to go.

‘Hey, wait up!’ Sammie called to him as she grabbed onto his arm. ‘Don’t I get a hug?’ Nathan smiled.

‘Of course you do!’ Damn Sammie and her overly friendly self! I thought as they hugged eagerly. ‘Hey, do I get one from you too Sephy?’ Nathan asked as he and Sammie parted. I snuck a subtle glance at Nick. He looked bored and slightly annoyed but looked away as soon I looked at him. ‘I’ll be lonely...’

I didn’t dare look at my poor boyfriend again. ‘Oh go on then...’ I huffed, trying as hard as I could not to smile as Nathan picked me up in a huge bear hug.

I failed.

‘There we are! That wasn’t so hard was it?’ Nathan insisted.

‘Meh.,’ I grumbled.

‘See you guys tomorrow then! Bye Sephy, Sammie...Nick. See you, oh, and Sephy,’ he looked down at me. My lip quivered involuntarily. ‘I think it’s a yes.’

And he was gone. Gah...

‘Why are you smiling Sephy?’ Nick turned to me, his face a picture of perfect, innocent confusion.

‘Yeah, your lips have gone all smiley in a way I never knew was possible.’ Sammie explained unhelpfully.

‘I don’t know. I feel...’ Happy. I didn’t dare say the last word in front of Nick. I mean, I wasn’t happy because of Nathan, I was happy because Nathan agreed to the band thing. Of course. But Nick might not know that.

‘Happy?’ Sammie intervened again. I frowned.

‘No. Stop being stupid, woman. Now let’s go.’ I grabbed hold of Nick’s reluctant hand and we made our way to our bus stop.
