Edit: So there may be some spelling mistakes because in Australia we spell some things differently. I'm trying to write it in US English since that is my majority of the audience and the story is set in America. There might be some Australian language in here though.

Max slowly woke up from one of his best nights of sleep, snuggling My Honeynuts slightly. The scratchy, uncomfortable sheets and the chirps of the morning birds immediately told Max that he was back at Camp Campbell. At first it was puzzling since he didn't even remember limping into the tent or getting into bed in the first place. The hard cast around his foot and his arm served as a crude reminder of the events from the day before.

Fractured pictures of his dreams floated around his head in a blur. David was in it, carrying him to bed and tucking him in. The dream got more hazy when a David-sized version of Mr Honeynuts took the both of them on an adventure to seek out the giant watermelon. It apparently turned out the watermelon was inside us all along. He smiled to himself at the memory.

The part where he was tucked in was the most vivid and made him feel the most fuzzy, as if someone would actually take the time to care for him. Something about that part felt so real, as if it possibly did happen.

Like lightning, a horror struck his entire body at the realization of what he said to the man as he tucked him in. Max muttered curses under his breath at the thought of saying "goodnight" to the camp man. He hoped he was dreaming when he called him "dad."

Shit.

The rush of adrenaline from horrible nightmare was enough to give Max the energy to wake up from his half state of sleep. He struggled to sit up on his bed with his bad arm and dodgy leg, sighing at the inconvenience. Looking around the room, he found his crutches leaning against the wall and Neil's empty bed. Max sloppily got out of the bed, grateful that no one could see him, especially Nurf.

A cool morning breeze hit him in the face as soon as he went outside. Although he would never admit it to anyone, the morning air was the best part of the days at camp. Max immediately went over to the Mess Hall to get some food. His stomach rumbling at the thought of Quartermaster's disgusting potatoes was a clear sign he would have just about wanted to eat anything. He hoped he was hungry enough to make the crap taste bearable for once.

As soon as he entered the Mess Hall everyone's eyes were staring at him with fascination.  Max should have known that the myriad of casts and bandages would have attracted a lot on unwanted attention. He couldn't containing his grin when Nikki and Neil's eyes both lit up at the sight of him. They rushed towards him with their arms wide open, ready to crush him with a bear hug.

As soon as everyone calmed down he was seated at the table with a plate of scrambled "eggs" while Nikki and Neil recounted what he had missed out on while he was away. Neil had offered to carry his food tray from him, which was a bit surprising since Max was a dick to everyone. People were crowding around as well, asking how bad the injuries were.

People were being surprisingly nice to him, saying how they were glad he was back. Nerris and Harrison were even competing with each other over who could cast the better healing spell. Max's stomach couldn't help but sink when a the thought that he didn't even deserve it entered. He couldn't help but feel guilty for wasting everyone's time by drawing attention to himself. As soon as they were reminded about what an asshole he was they would go back to wishing Max never existed.

"So you saved David? Of all people!," Neil asked as soon as everyone left. "I thought you hated him."

"Yeah me too," Nikki chimed in. "Wasn't he, like, 'the bane of your existence' or something?"
