As she arrived at the army barracks she sighed, she was dressed in a outfit she would never choose to wear, in black boots, and her hair pinned back. She didn't look like herself, let alone feel like herself. She inwardly scolded herself, she just had fourteen weeks of basic training to get through before she could feel like a doctor again.

She stood somewhat nervously alongside various other British Army recruits, listening to the Corporal explaining about the fourteen weeks ahead of them.

"He's hot," a slightly younger woman whispered to her and Connie couldn't help but smile,

"Miss Chase... Is there something you want to add?" He asked and Connie couldn't help but smirk as the woman next to her whispered her apology,

"No Corporal," she replied succinctly, her eyes meeting his as he continued to explain what the weeks ahead would bring.

They stood in an orderly line that evening, checking their kit and wondering what on earth they'd let themselves in for.

Two officers spoke to them about the importance of kit checks, before the tall Corporal entered the room.

"Miss Chase," he nodded,

"Corporal," she replied,

"You sure you've got this right first time?" He asked and she nodded,

"Yes Corporal,"

He nodded, before moving down the line and checking that everyone else bags were as neat and well stocked.

"There are twelve of you... Get used to there being twelve of you," he told them the following morning. "This will be a training run... 10km may not seem too far, but running with rucksacks is always harder than you think," he looked around, "take your time... I'll be at the front, officer Davies will be at the back..."

"Is this a race Corp?" Chloe asked, "do we work as a team or not?"

"This will be run as a group," he nodded, and Connie stepped closer to Chloe, tightening the straps on her rucksack,

"Thanks," she nodded and Connie smiled, "it will move around less now," she replied.

Not that he was going to admit it so early on, but he was impressed by the speed and stamina Connie and Chloe showed. They were in a group made up of mainly men, training to be soldiers. The two women were training to be an army surgeon and a nurse and needed to pass the basic training grade in order to do so.

Connie smiled as Chloe helped her to remove her rucksack at the end of the run.

"How on earth does your hair stay like that?" Chloe asked and Connie smiled,

"Keratin blow dry," she admitted, "I'd recommend it,"

Chloe rolled her eyes, "you think this is going to get harder?"

Connie couldn't help but laugh as she watched the other recruits laying down to catch their breath, "probably... But I think we'll be fine."

"This run is mind numbing," her now friend and confidante uttered. They had just reached what they thought was the check point, before they'd been told to jog back to the start again,

Connie nodded, slowing her pace, "tell me about it... It's to test our endurance and mental endurance," she sighed, "you happy to keep going?"

Chloe grinned, "we're at the front... Of course... The sooner we finish this, the sooner we can have some wine,"

"Wine?" Connie asked and Chloe smirked, "I've got a few small bottles... I think we need it after this,"

"Where are you going?" He asked as she opened her tent early the following morning. Her hair was in a low bun pinned to her head, her freckles spanning across her unmade up face.

"For a run Corp," she told him quietly so as not to wake up anyone else, "I can't sleep,"

"You'll be doing enough activity today," he told her and she shrugged,

"I'm used to working over twelve hour shifts... I'll cope," she told him and he rolled his eyes,

"I'll come with you," he told her and she nodded.

"I don't feel like talking," she admitted and he nodded,

"Nether do I... Follow me, I know somewhere I think you'll like,"

"No shouting?" She asked, her eyebrow raised,

"No... Not this early,"

They jogged at a steady pace side by side, she kept up with him easily and every now and again she couldn't help but throw him a slither of a smile, that he couldn't help but return. After thirty minutes, he lead her to a small path, jogging through the trees and stopping before her, watching how her eyes lit up.

"Wow," she breathed, her eyes sparkling as she took in the lake before her, "this is incredible."

He gently pulled her down to crouch beside him, a gentle smile on her face as they watched two deer drinking from the water. They watched for a while before he checked his watch, "we should get back,"

She nodded, taking out her phone and taking a photograph of the scene before her, before she stood back up, "come on then, let's get back for breakfast."
