Rose couldn't help wondering what would have been if he had stayed.
Him, the boy who had made everything just a little bit brighter. Him, the one who pulled the world into focus. Him, the one who she missed with every fiber of her being.
He had left, but where had he gone? What was he doing? And did he miss her too?
It was strange to think of him, because it occurred to her that they really hadn't known each other that well, and all these feelings had been so new and uncharted.
Usually by this stage Rose would come to resent the object of her affection, but despite her track record, the boy she was thinking about was still as pristine and pure in her mind as the day she had first noticed just how bright his smile was. Maybe even more so since she had come to love his laugh and the way his eyes lit up when he talked about something he was passionate about.
They could have been so much.
She could've gone to his basketball games and cheered him on, standing in the bleachers and screaming his name way louder than she should have.
He could've given her ideas and advice about her latest paintings, and maybe even distracted her from the things she should've been doing.
He could have been the boy she was texting late at night and smiling about because he just said something funny about Pokémon.
Rose sighed, closing her eyes and trying to imagine him looking at her like he used to. She tried everything, but her memory of him was fading, along with her happiness.
