Prologue:

Space is dark, and it is cold, but it is not empty.

Somewhere deep in space, farther out than any man could dream of going, a clan Elder's voice echoed across an almost empty room.

"Step forward, both of you." Lar'ja-luar'ke, the aforementioned Elder, called calmly from his place. His body was languidly stretched upon a throne-like structure, contrary to his title, his body was also made of hardened muscle.

The two blooded warriors who stood before him bowed in supplication, their eyes did not dare go above themselves.

It was their own fault he had called them there, it was their own fault they were being punished, they had been foolish beyond dismissal.

Misspeaking against a female often resulted in death, it was by her apparent "mercy", that they still breathed.

"H'chakde." Elder Lar'ja's voice demanded the bigger of the two warriors to stand, he was the most bruised from the ordeal as he had been the louder of the two during the altercation. It was most amusing to Lar'ja-Luar'ke, he'd seen many prideful youths perish, how this one had survived his own blooding ceremonies left him wondering about the fate of the Yautja.

Then again, he had been angry, proud, and foolish once upon a time.

"Kweide" the other blooded Yautja stood in silence, as he approached he kept his gaze away from the burning amber that seemed to wish him pain.

Elder Lar'ja did not look away for some time. He wanted them to squirm, particularly Kweide, he knew he knew better. Kweide's lapse of judgment would not easily be forgotten. Especially not by those whom he offended.

"You know you will be punished?"

Both the warriors nodded.

"You are aware of the usual punishments, they seek for quick vengeance, they seek for physical reminders," Elder Lar'ja glanced to his daughter, one of the finest warriors- if not the best-, on the ship. She was seething in rage. "R'ka-dekna demands worse."

The blooded warriors kept themselves from reacting, if they did, she might just kill them on the spot. It would not be out of her rights.

"I cannot disagree, but-" He paused to begin standing from his chair. "I will not have you killed. It would be a waste. You are fools, but fools who carry potential." He turned to look out the viewing screen, stars littered around the void in chaotic beauty. "Do not feel relieved though, you will be taught humility and be reminded of your place."

The two looked at each other and then back to the ground. Their lives had been spared, but what price were they going to pay?

"You will go to Earth and while there the scanners on your bodies will map the chosen forest for hunting grounds. You will need to be there no more than a few breathes for them to complete their job. But your task does not end there."  Elder Lar'ja turned to them, body taut with anger.

"You will take servants," At the sight of their calm confusion he could not keep the malice from his voice. "Servants whom you cannot hurt, servants that you must keep alive and unharmed above all else. Unless you wish to die as well."

They would be humbled one way or the other, whether through the harsh jeers of their peers or the fact that they must cater to their servant as if they were the master. It was outrageous, but an Elder's orders were like local law. There would be no disagreements.

"I hope you are disappointed, I hope you both are burning with fury." Elder Lar'ja walked closer, he stood taller than them both. "I want you to be filled with those feelings, and then I want you to remember why you must face these tasks. You did this to yourselves." He lifted a sharp and lethal claw to point at them. "You lost yourselves to C'ntlip, that is no other's fault but your own.

They bowed their heads further. They did not argue and would not complain.

With a growl of disapproval, he spun on his heel and stalked back to his throne-like seat. He moved to dismiss them but he paused as his daughter stepped forward. Her eyes spoke for her, they demanded he makes their task more challenging.

She had beaten both males until they needed a medic, but she wanted more than a missing appendage from them. She wanted their pride.

"Before you both go, I will inform you of a stipulation, your servants must be Oomans, feral Oomans."  A domesticated human would be too easy, they were bred and raised by Yautja on their homeworld, there would be no challenge there.

But a feral one? One who was Earthborn and free? It would be near impossible to tame.  Humans were notoriously dangerous and defiant creatures to handle even on the best of occasions. On the worst, they were deadly to an unprepared warrior.

The bitter oily smell of aggression began to lessen from the air as R'ka-dekna let out laughter, obviously at their expense. Whatever horrors the two would face, she would be enjoying it.

Elder Lar'ja clicked his tusks for their attention, when he received it he pointed his spear at them both. "Go." It was a clear warning.

The young males slunk away in shame. They could do nothing but face their orders now. Two humans were what they needed, so two humans are what they would take. It did not matter who or what kind, they just needed some that would be unnoticeable. The humans were notorious for waiting for vengeance.   It would be better they not endanger their clan.

With strength neither of the Yatuja felt, they walked past the others. They would be quick to turn on the two Yautja like wolves on the omegas of the pack if they knew of their punishment.

So instead of garnering any more attention, they silently got into their small ship and set for their preset coordinates. The cryogenic gas soon eased both Yautja into a dreamless slumber. Neither would be prepared for what was to come.

Elsewhere, on Earth, located somewhere in the Oregon region. Two girl's stood side by side with their backs to the edge of the woods. Both were young and lively and both sported overstuffed heavy duty camping backpacks despite them only deciding to hike for a maximum of three days.

Of the two the dirty blond was the calmest as she applied sunscreen to her arms in preparation for their walk.

That calmness did not reflect on the brunette's face. She was smiling, but there was an air of anxiety around her as she slipped extra bandages into the zipper pocket of her green jacket.

Despite the nervous aura of her friend, the blond gave a confident smile and adjusted her coast guard baseball cap so her eyes were better shielded from the sun

It was perfect here, isolated and serene in the most spectacular display of nature either girl had seen. Their goal was to hike the mountain and take a few days away from their loved ones.

It took only a soothing breeze to finally coax the brunette out of her shell slightly, they were in nature now.

It seemed right again to put the silly birthday hat from her bag upon her own head. It was her twenty-fourth birthday after all.

Her friend giggled a bit giving her a weird look in response.

They were acting as they normally would any other day. Having little knowledge that this day and the days to come would never be normal again.
