Chapter 42

For a moment I stared at Jesse before falling to my knees. I ignored Lucifer’s cruel laugh, and focused my attention on Jesse’s face. His eyes were glassy, his lips red, and his skin cold.

“You stupid boy...” I forced a smile.

His eyes met mine as I lifted his head to my lap.

“What on earth were you thinking?” I shook my head.

He struggled with a shrug saying. “I don’t know. I wasn’t really thinking...”

My head fell, his forehead against mine. “Oh Jesse,” I held a cry. “I’m so sorry...”

He didn’t say anything, instead he grunted from the pain. I fixated my eyes on my hands as they traced his chest. Three daggers, three wooden handles, three wounds....I harshly shut my eyes, as his warm blood touched my finger tips.

“Lucia,” Jesse sighed. “Look, this...this is beyo-beyond, corny...”

                “Shh...”

“But I know we barely know each other,” He smiled. “I mean- I- I don’t even know your favorite color.”

I frustratingly sighed. “Jesse, please just shh,” I felt my throat begin to close. He shouldn’t have been here; he should have just stayed inside the train, and never have followed me. He shouldn’t even be at my feet right now...he shouldn’t be dying!

“Lucia,” He whispered, reaching for my chin. When he got me to look at his eyes he said. “I’m still awfully glad we met.”

I cried and laughed at the same time falling to embrace the dying boy. “Jesse,” I whimpered.

His breath slowly became more and more raspy and faint. The tears I held back were as stubborn as I am, soon I couldn’t help but feel them roll down my cheeks. My sight was blurring from the water, and shortly all I could see was a smudged image of Jesse.

“How, sweet...” A cackle came from the bottom of the stairs. “The devil’s child cries.”

I whipped my head up, my heartache turning to pure hatred. Lucifer’s eyes were filled with glee as he took small steps closer to us.

“Oh,” He superficially sighed. “In all honesty Lucia, this is quite the sight to see!”

Gently I lifted Jesse off my lap and stood up. “Do you really feel nothing?”
