"hey, tyler."

i look over to see josh sitting next to me with his lunch.

i had been looking at brendon and melanie.

"when did you get here?" i ask.

"u-um... just now, actually," he says.

"oh" is all i said.

"hey, tyler..."

"yeah, josh?" i ask, looking at the red haired boy.

"why do you always stare at brendon and melanie?" josh asks.

my eyes grow wide. "u-uh... um... err... i-i..." i stutter.

"it's okay, tyler. you can tell me. i'm always listening," josh whispers.

"i love brendon and melanie is stealing him away from me," i spill.

josh looks at me, confused.

"is that really what you're worried about?" he asks.

i look at him, confused. what does he mean?

"melanie is lesbian and is dating ashley. brendon is openly gay. what is there to worry about?"

it all clicks. well, shit. all of my worries have been for nothing.

"i-i just thought..." i start.

josh wraps his arms around me and pulls me close. "don't worry about it. you just were so caught up in your emotions that you didn't realize both of their sexualities," he says and pulls away, unwrapping his arms from me.

i could've sworn i heard josh whisper, "like how i'm caught up right now?" but i can't be sure.

i shrug.

"how's the dare going?" simon asks, nudging my elbow.

i sigh. "he likes brendon so i don't think i'll be able to do it," i say.

"i can't believe you actually went through with it. you can stop anytime, y'know. there's no punishment. the kid is literally the cutest guy in school but is still a virgin. that's hard," simon shrugs.

i shake my head. "anyway, how is you and JJ?"

simon's face goes bright red. "h-hey!"

i laugh. "but, seriously. how is it turning out for you?"

simon sighs. "as far as i know, JJ is straight and has no interest in, well, me."

"you could be wrong," i say, shrugging.

i really hope i'm wrong about something else, though.
