Scooby-Doo (Why is there so much hate)

Well, you heard me gush about Mystery Incorporated.

But I have a bit of a nitpick.

And that's with everyone saying that the franchise needs to die.

Like, I get that people have opinions and that they don't like the show on the whole. But like with the amount of hate that I have seen for the poor dog lately, especially on Top 10 lists....like what the actual fuck.

And here are the reasons I often hear:

1) "Scooby-Doo is not interesting. It's just the same basic formula."

Uh, yeah. It's a show from 1969. The formula used back then is what made it popular. What did you expect, fucking Hamlet?

And yeah, it is still a bit formulaic, but honestly at least there was some sort of mystery to keep kids entertained. (Btw, Mystery Incorporated!, Zombie Island, Witch's Ghost and Samurai's Sword did significantly change up the formula so you can't say that they were tedious all the time. And Where's My Mummy! did have bit of a surprise twist at the end.)

2) "Scooby-Doo has lost its charm."

....Okay this is probably the only point that I'll agree with on the whole. After Abracadabra-Doo! came out, the movies kind of got bland. They aren't terrible by any means but they have gone from "holy shit that's really good" to decent to amazing to eh. And by Scooby-Doo movies, I'm talking about the slew of the animated direct-to-DVD movies that came out after Zombie Island.

The TV series however.....yeah, majority of them are crap. With the sole exception of What's New, Scooby-Doo! and Mystery Incorporated!, (I hear that A Pup Named Scooby-Doo was rather decent as well) most were seriously boring as hell. One of the main reasons why I love this franchise is because of the characters. Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy and Scooby are the main reasons why I come back to this show. When you take out majority of the cast and leave only Shaggy and Scooby, it doesn't leave much room for characters to work off each other. Imo, Shaggy and Scooby aren't exactly the most interesting characters when on their own, at least, when they have their own show.

And I haven't watched Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!, so I can't be the judge of that.

3)"Scrappy-Doo is annoying as fuck."

.....Okay, there's a scene in Mystery Incorporated! where Fred and Daphne are on a date at the Crystal Cove Museum. When they come across a statue of Scrappy, they literally refused to even look at it.

In the first live action movie, Scooby-Doo, Scrappy is literally revealed as the villain, wanting revenge on the gang for kicking him out.

So what was the purpose of those two examples? The purpose was to show you that EVEN THE CREATORS ARE ASHAMED OF THE FACT THAT THIS CHARACTER EXISTS. Yeah, in case you haven't noticed, the fans aren't the only people who hate this fucking puppy.

4) "Scooby-Doo is for kids."

And here's where I'll stop you. Hollywood is what literally made the entire franchise so kid-oriented. There are toys, Scooby-Doo related merch marketed for boys, similar to how the Powerpuff Girls are being marketed primarily towards girls, despite both of those shows being rather gender neutral.

Scooby-Doo used to be so that the entire family could watch. Yeah, even back then it was aimed at kids but the parents watching it with them wouldn't get a headache just by looking at it.

5) And finally: "Scooby-Doo's time has come and gone."

And you know whose mouths this argument comes from the most? People who have literally no idea about the formula that makes this show work and......fifteen year old teens.

Granted, some people do have legitimate reasons on why they think that. But for gods sake it's like how Tom and Jerry are big names today. Scooby-Doo is and will always be famous as hell. Scooby-Doo has been around for at least three - four generations of kids. So if this franchise didn't die back in the eighties, what exactly makes you think it's going to die now?

But with all that said:

I'd much rather have the series go out on a bang rather than just die out like many of the other Hanna-Barbara cartoons way back in the day. When you think about the fact that Scooby-Doo has survived for over forty years, then they have to be doing something right.

Question: With the Wattys going around, what's your favorite book? It can be any genre! Comment below and let me know!

On a completely unrelated note (And this will make much more sense if you read Magi):
