Why Is Tumblr Not a Safe Place for Artists Anymore?

{ Edit (08-09-2022): I saw that this rant was unpublished and idk if Wattpad is fucking with me or I unpublished it by myself at some point. I suppose I can see the reason why, but if this rant was triggering you, please consider this note your new Trigger Warning, as I do shortly mention the attempted suicide of an tumblr artist from way back when this rant was initially published. Again, it's a relatively short mention, and I talk more about the aftermath and response to the incident rather than the attempt itself, but its something worth a warning note. }

I think the title itself gives away what I'm going to talk about. With that said, I have a VERY strong desire to set the SU fandom, the SJW, and the rest of Tumblr on fire.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, grab yourself some popcorn and get ready to hear a story and a furious rant. On Tumblr, there is a popular artist that goes by the name of Zamii070. If you have heard of her, then you know how people have been literally calling her art racist and incorrect, accusing her of FAT SHAMING after posting a drawing of Amethyst (or Rose, I don't remember), ect. In fact, majority of her SU fanart have been hated on for not being "correct" or aka, not up to their standards. All of this hate drove her to the point of her attempting suicide. Luckily, she survived and is in the hospital recovering.

First off: OH MY GOD.

I want to kill the SU fandom. Or moreover, Tumblr in general.

I can't even express the words for this. I'm utterly horrified. What did this artist do that was so fucking horrendous?! The fact that she didn't draw Garnet the way YOU WANTED IT?! THE FACT THAT HER ART STYLE IS DIFFERENT FROM SU's ART? THE FACT THAT SHE DREW AMETHYST AND ROSE SKINNY? THE FACT THAT THE WAY SHE DRAWS EYES DIFFERENTLY? AS THOUGH THAT'S GOING TO CHANGE THEIR APPEARANCES IN THE SHOW.

OH I'M SORRY, DOES THE WAY SHE DRAW MAKE HER A "PROBLEMATIC ARTIST"? I DIDN'T REALIZE THAT THE ENTIRE FREAKING WORLD WAS SUPPOSED TO GIVE YOU THE CROWN AND CRITICIZE HER WORK, SOMETHING THAT SHE MUST HAVE WORKED ON FOREVER!

What you arrogant Tumblr users call "problematic", I just call an effing art style. Ever heard of that before? Because if you had, you wouldn't be sitting around hating on someone's art and your arse would know just how hard it is to draw something and then having it hated on.

In one of my previous rants, I said that criticism is different from hate. Criticism, depending on whether it is constructive or not, can be used to make you into a better writer. Hate is hate, period. The field of art, is no exception to that rule. Art and writing is supposed to be a community of artists and writers alike sharing their work and helping others like them improve.

From what I have seen on Tumblr so far, it has quickly deteriorated. It has deteriorated into a community full of hate and apparent strict rules on what people can draw, what they can't draw, how to draw them, what weight, ect.

I'm not saying that people should draw racist drawings or whitewash characters. But if there's one thing most people forget about both writing and art, it's not supposed to be bound by rules. Sure, there's rules of conventions and grammar in writing stories and the use of a art medium and what type of pencils we use for drawing but ultimately, they are both ruled by our emotions. Creativity plays a huge part in what we do. We write what we think and feel, we draw what we feel and think. You may not agree with it, but we didn't create it for you. It was for ourselves. In short, I think what Tumblr, (especially the SU fandom for that matter) isn't realizing is that art can have different interpretations. That is far different from racism and whitewashing.

And when a staff of a show has to intervene into their audience's prejudice and hate, you know something is wrong. In fact, that's what one of SU's Executive producers, Ian JQ, did. Despite the FNAF fandom shipping robots and drawing them rather sexually, they don't have Scott Cawthon telling them to tone it down. I think that comparison itself says a lot about the SU fandom, especially when that fandom has a wonderful show about love and compassion.

I'm sorry, I'm a little too angry to continue but you get the point of this rant.  And I'm not saying that every single user on Tumblr is like this but honestly, enough is enough. You may not be "that" crowd but this is majority of Tumblr.
