But today?
Today we sat in the soft lull of anticipation.
"I wonder if Yoongi-hyung will like my shoes,"
Hobi murmured, glancing down at his feet.
"I wonder if Jin-hyung will kill me on sight."
"He might."
"Yeah," I laughed nervously.
"He totally might."
We were at a red light. I reached over, grabbing his hand.
He laced our fingers without hesitation.
The sun filtered through the windshield, lighting him up like he was born from it.
"You know something?" I said, squeezing his hand.
"Whatever happens today, I want you to know... I love you."
He turned to me, eyes shining a little.
"I love you too," he said.
"No, like. Really. I'm scared shitless. I don't know if I'll mess this up. But I know you being beside me is the only thing keeping me together."
His smile was soft. Heartbreaking.
"You're not alone anymore, Koo."
The light turned green.
And we drove.
He reached for the dashboard and turned the volume up just a little.
A soft instrumental played-something slow and warm. Familiar. Something we'd danced to at home once, half-drunk on wine and laughter. He hummed along, fingers drumming on his thigh.
"You think they'll hug us?"
he asked suddenly.
"Tae will," I said, swallowing the knot in my throat. "If he doesn't cry first."
"He's allowed to," Hobi murmured.
"He's allowed to do anything he needs."
I nodded.
A pause.
"And Y/N noona... she looked at you like she already loved you."
"She made me feel like I mattered,"
he whispered.
"You do. To them. To me."
"I can't wait to meet Joon."
I laughed. "He's gonna adore you."
"And Jin-hyung?"
"You're gonna ruin his cool lawyer persona in two minutes flat."
He grinned wide. "I can live with that."
And then, as we pulled into the side street near the café, the panic started to hit again.
My heart started racing. Palms sweating.
Hobi reached over and rested his hand on my chest.
"Breathe."
"I'm gonna throw up."
"You are not gonna throw up."
"What if they hate me?"
"They won't."
"What if Tae-"
"-Loves you. Still. Always."
I turned the engine off.
The café was just around the corner.
Five minutes from where we parked.
We both stared out the windshield.
I felt his fingers slip into mine again.
"Ready?" he asked softly.
