    "What excuse did you give them this time?" 
    he asked, eyes on me, voice curious but not judging. 
    I blinked. 
    Then shrugged, tossing my phone aside and leaning back against the couch. 
    "Work," I said simply. 
    "Told them I needed to prep for pre-trial rehearsals tomorrow. Which is true, technically. But also..." 
    I looked at him, letting the smile curl slow and real. 
    "I figured this counts as breathing room. You're my breathing room." 
    Jungkook's gaze softened. 
    "Rehearsals start tomorrow?" he asked. 
    "Yeah," I nodded. 
    "It's all starting. Opening statements, timelines, testimony prep. It's going to get hectic." 
    "You'll do great," 
    he said, without missing a beat. "Really." 
    The quiet assurance in his voice landed somewhere low in my chest. 
    Like the warmth you feel under too many blankets-unnecessary, but safe. 
    "Thanks," I murmured, nudging his foot with mine. "I needed that." 
    We lapsed into a pause-comfortable, like the kind you share when the silence says more than words. 
    Then Jungkook shifted, voice softer now. 
    "Yoongi hyung messaged me this morning." 
    I looked over at him. 
    His eyes weren't on me anymore-they were on the controller in his lap, his thumbs tracing the analog sticks even though the game was paused. 
    "Said I didn't have to respond. Just told me about his day," he said. 
    "Jin hyung too. Joon hyung. Y/N noona..." 
    He took a breath, not quite shaky-but careful. 
    "They've all been doing that. Reaching out. But not expecting anything. It's like they're giving me space, but still..." 
    He trailed off. 
    Still waiting.
    Still hoping. 
    I didn't speak. 
    Just let the quiet sit there for a second, gave him the air to say what he needed. 
    "I feel bad," he said finally. 
    "About hiding this. About not... jumping in. But my situation....I just.. I-it's holding me back." 
    His voice cracked just slightly on that last word.
